They are blue, oval shaped table placemats. I bought them at a Wal-Mart here in Mexico, so I'm not sure if they carry them in the U.S./Canadian stores.

For starters, I would not use cardboard or plastic for the best results. If you can find it on Amazon, ebay or elsewhere you might want to pick up the book "No Strings Attached". It's not a how-to book, but you can get a lot of information about constructing animatronics from it. There are a couple of videos on this page that may be helpful too.

Have you tried contacting the Cincinnati Area Puppetry Guild? That might be a good place to start, they are a pretty good guild from what I've heard. You should check out the Cincinnati Puppet Slam on October 18th, you'll probably meet lots of puppet people there.
