I did some digging because I was suspicious about a few aspects of the video and I'm starting to lean towards it not being real. I've posted some stuff about this on PuppetVision, but the few people I know in Reykjavik say no one heard anything about this. I also emailed a pilot I know who has...
It's for a jeans commercial (supposedly) being shot in Iceland. It is apparently real, and if it is it's an incredible feat. Probably the biggest marionette ever, bigger than even the stuff that Royal De Luxe does.
You can't really buy the mechs off the shelf. For most puppets they are custom made (a few animatronics shops sell kits but they cost in to the thousands of dollars).
A good book to buy to learn how to make mechs is Figure Making Can Be Fun. You can also look at the popular diagrams that are...
Try Cinepaint. Bit of a learning curve involved, but if you take the time to learn it there can be good results. Some of the professional special effect studios use it. Blender is primarily a 3D animation program, but it has a compositor too, though I haven't tried working with it.
Always pattern a puppet with the mouth open, not closed. You can scan patterns in to the computer with a scanner. I just mentioned this in another thread, but check out my Guide To Puppet Building Resources as it has lots of resources that can help, especially the links section.
Thanks guys, I got a bunch of responses so far which is great. I saw these in the summer and had a pretty good idea how they were done, but that kind of confirms it for me. Someone wrote and pointed out that the "hand hugger" is better suited to inflexible mouthplates so I'm not sure if it will...
Over the past year I've trying to reinvent the way I make mouthplates to make them as comfortable and flexible as possible (I'll post some pics online of what I've come up with when I'm done the project I'm working on right now).
Over the summer I met a few people who had built puppets from...
I've tried it. I love the concept of it, but I really love using Final Draft.
Another nice, free (well, donations are encouraged) screenwriting program is Rough Draft.
I think this came up awhile ago in an old thread, but I couldn't find it...someone was looking for those cable-controlled face masks that ventriloquists use to turn people in to "dummies". I've got a link to a place that has them for sale if anyone is still looking -...
Hi all,
This is a little last minute, but one of the things I am doing for PuppetBuilding.com is a video podcast about puppet building. Not sure if it will be weekly, biweekly or monthly (it kind of depends on my time) but I am taping the first installment either tomorrow night (Thursday) or...
I believe Nick is planning to podcast a bunch of the episodes, maybe even the whole season eventually. It's part of their effort to get in to online video in a big way.
I enjoy reading what Jim writes and hearing his point of view on things, but often it's a lot of hot air based more on his personal speculation than actual facts.
Good journalism has sources and facts that can be verified. Anytime you read anything like this it's a good idea to ask yourself...
I haven't done much with the new stuff yet, but I agree with most of Ravagefrackle's comments about the stretch on the new Antron. I haven't encountered the patterning problem myself (yet) but the pile doesn't seem as thick and it seems to be little more challenging to disguise seams. I am sure...
