>>>The Muppets have been caught in a time warp for a decade and they really need to get out of it or instead of telling the jokes, they will become the joke (i.e. Scooby Doo). And none of us wants that to happen.<<<

The stuck in the time warp I feel comes from the ill concived perception that the Muppets are outdated, and a product of the seventies(ie: 'the nostalgia syndrome')

Exactly what I was saying. It does not help when characters have very 80s retro looks that could easily be updated.

WHAT?!

OMGOMG, PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE do not tell me that I am so so sooooooooooooooooo close to hearin' my "Muppet Show" gal speak once again after years of silence (except for the recent video game), only to be stomped on and laughed at!!

Really!

Do not!

:frown:

*SIGH*

And she looked so lively in the picture on the press release page...*sniff*

If there's a scene with Andy & Randy Pig over Janice and/or the EM, I am SOOOOOOOOOOOo gonna boycott these so-called "editors"...

And I can do it, too! Just ask Jackie! LOL!!

Janice's hair

Wow, I had no idea there were Muppet fans so passionate over the ponytail, lol... :stick_out_tongue:

While I prefer the "classic Janice" straight-haired "spaghetti" look, the pony-tail doesn't bother me; it's just not my favored of the two.

Cory, are you sure that was a bandaid solution to Janice gettin' her hair caught in her mouth sometimes?? That'd be kinda funny if that were the reason---but I can't help think it would have been more of a "style update" for her. Besides, I thought Janice chewin' her hair was a cute li'l "Muppetism", lol...didn't happen a whole lot, but it was cool when it did---especially when Richard puppeteered her so that she took it out of her mouth with her hand, LOL! (There's one "Vet's Hospital" where that rully happens in a big way)

Anyway, with all the Hollywood gals shellin' out loads of dough to straighten their hair long and thin, ironically, Janice's TMS look would apparently be the most modern thing she could have right now! Lol!

I think I'd be scared to see her hair change much more...

Modernizing the characters should be done with caution. I really don't care to see a grunge Floyd or a Zoot with a nose ring. That would only make them seem dated when the movie is watched 5-10 years from now.

Granted, the Mayhem's original clothing styles were based on '60s and '70s styles, so maybe a slight alteration is in order. But being truly fashionable might change the look of the characters too much. To be really accurate to today's styles, Floyd should shave his moustache and cut off his ponytail! Now who here wants to see THAT? Keep in mind that Muppet fans have never stopped complaining since Piggy changed from her classic look in the late 70s/early 80s. It doesn't matter to fans that she's more fashionable now--she doesn't look like Piggy to us! I feel the same thing would happen with the Mayhem.

Look at the Peanuts characters. They maintained the same type of clothing that was common to kids in the '50s right up to the end of its run in 2000. Look at Donald Duck--he wears a type of sailor's outfit that the Navy hasn't used for decades! Puppets and cartoon characters can get away with more, in terms of keeping the same wardrobe, because people so heavily associate them with it. (For that matter, most cartoon characters never seem to bother to change their clothes at all!) ;-)

Conversely, Jim seemed to feel that the Mayhem was getting too dated. His solution was simply to stop featuring them. (Remember, there was a different band for The Jim Henson Hour.) Me, I'm just happy to see the Mayhem back (or not, when their scenes get edited!). And for the record, I was just fine--thrilled, in fact--when Floyd showed up at MuppetFest in his Sgt. Pepper's outfit.

Then again, I haven't changed my outfit since the 70's either. Whaddya mean, "what's that smell"? ;-)

I don't think anyone is saying what you propose. I think everyone would be against that.

I proposed that they turn back the clock to their classic look and make minor alterations rather than going in a totally different direction.

Janice could actually be rather radical in her clothing selection (it's a woman thing), but the rest should stay true to thier roots. Right now they are wearing 80s updates of thier classic look. That just seems lazy to me. Where do you buy Muppet clothes anyway? LOL (Yes, I know they make them)

Here's another story...

Snoop Gets Smacked Down By Kermit The Frog
From MTV News

Snoop Dogg has left the green behind, and now, the green has left him too.

The multi-platinum rapper says he hasn't smoked marijuana in several weeks, and yet despite this recent move toward a more "family-friendly" D-o-double-g, Snoop is apparently no longer welcome around Kermit the Frog.

Snoop's brief appearance in the made-for-television "It's a Very Muppet Christmas Movie" has been dropped from the final cut, according to a statement issued by the Jim Henson Company. And despite the company's insistence that the cameo was excised because it "did not advance [the show's] story line," an Islamic activist group is claiming responsibility for the change.

"Snoop has openly advocated the use of drugs, he financially supported a pornographic video and he writes and performs music that is both sexually explicit and violent," explained Imam Najee Ali, director of the Los Angeles-based Project Islamic Hope. "This is not the image that our children should be exposed to in a Muppets [show]."

Ali claims that it was his group's threat of an NBC boycott — which the organization made public via the syndicated Larry Elder Show four days before the Muppet folks' announcement — that prompted the show's producers to make the cut. He also credits conservative television host Bill O'Reilly, who railed against the planned cameo last week.

A spokesperson for the Jim Henson Company, however, countered that the Henson press release went out prior to any of the public criticism of Snoop, and added it went to Bill O'Reilly before his story ran.

"They're embarrassed that they had to cave in to public pressure," Ali reasoned. "No corporation wants to be perceived as weak, they want to be perceived as strong ... and not giving in to threats from protesters. Our actions, as well as Mr. O'Reilly's ... we were the catalyst."

A representative for Snoop Dogg declined to comment.

Though he doesn't mind sharing credit with O'Reilly, Ali was quick to point out that he'd prefer not to be associated with the TV personality's viewpoints on other issues, such as the recent debate sparked by O'Reilly concerning Pepsi and rapper Ludacris (see "Ludacris Barks Back At Pepsi, O'Reilly; P-Roach Antics Not An Issue For Soda Giant").

"I'm not going to support someone really targeting hip-hop from the outside," he said. "Our generation needs to be the ones that have a say in hip-hop, not music outsiders like O'Reilly and C. Delores Tucker and other conservatives.

"Had Snoop not made the porno video we probably would have just taken a pass and not bothered with it," he continued, adding that he once watched the "first five minutes" of the "Doggystyle" video for research purposes. "It was just so graphic and so hardcore that I had to say something about this, being an activist who's also a religious leader."

This isn't Ali's first offensive against Snoop. Project Islamic Hope claimed responsibility for having Snoop's Los Angeles radio show removed from KKBT last year.

"We're definitely trying to [gain] some momentum," Ali said. "We're going to be organizing a conference nationwide. We're trying to ask the rappers to clean up the music as far as lyrical content. We feel they contribute to black-on-black crime. It's kind of tricky because we don't want to be perceived as censors. We want artists to take more responsibility."

HOW DO YOU THINK I FEEL!!!! I mean... "rully." I have seen Dr. Teeth make a comeback (in the "WE are Family" video), but no Janice? I mean, giving them those corny bit parts in the last three movies was kinda sad. Specially since mostly, they didn't talk (Dr. Teeth said SHalom in MFS, while at least Animal, Zoot, and Floyd got to say a line).

But to bring it up, Corey didn't come up with the Hair Hypothesis (the addition of pony tail to stop hair in her mouth), I did.

I just don't want to see them updated any more. Rully!!!

[jokey indignant voice]HEY! I gots a mustache and a ponytail! Are you saying I'm not fashionable?!?!? [/jokey indignant voice]

seriously thouhg, some very minor alterations would be kay, but really, for the mayhem at least, that sort of 60's style never REALLY goes out...it fades a bit, bu always comes back..Clifford looks WAAAY more dated as "muppet arsenio" but the Electric Mayhem are timeless!

OK. Sorry, guess I misunderstood then. With all this talk about "they're stuck in a time warp," I got the impression that people wanted to see a very 2002 Mayhem, and that was what I was against.

Janice could actually be rather radical in her clothing selection (it's a woman thing), but the rest should stay true to thier roots. Right now they are wearing 80s updates of thier classic look. That just seems lazy to me.

I always liked 80s fashion and hope it'll be returning soon . . . but yes, the characters should not wear something that looks dated rather than classic or contemporary.

Where do you buy Muppet clothes anyway? LOL (Yes, I know they make them)
Silly. You buy Muppet clothes at the Muppet Gap, or the Muppet Old Navy, or (in Sweetums' case) at the Muppet Big, Tall and Hairy! ;-)
