I am not exaggerating when I say whenever I watch an episode of Fraggle Rock, I leave with a slightly more peaceful and nourished frame of mind. You can literally get smarter watching this show, lol.
Well like I said, there's a lot to admire about those older protagonists (and even the villains) and it's a shame that society has forgotten that.
A fan saying Disney's best work was during Walt's time or the Muppets during Jim's time is not pessimism. It's people having a preference. As you...
This is true, lol. Which to me says their origins don't really matter (up to a point, Mr. Bay! Lol).
When I say an origin story is lazy writing, I mean it's obvious and literal, "we must start at the beginning." Whereas having the movie start from the point of view of April discovering the...
It can be both. You can have dated elements and still have a timeless story. The theme of the bullied hero/heroine is timeless. But the whole "I'm a strong woman and I need more!" does instantly make me think "Ah yes, this was following the feminist movement." It was your basic trying too hard...
I think if you showed them to a young audience today, yes they would be timeless, absolutely. I just found that they didn't grow up with me. We are puzzle pieces that don't fit anymore if that makes sense, lol. If they still fit other people, that's great. Again, the music is still wonderful, if...
Exactly, that was the done the right way. Get the origin out of the way quickly, and into the action. You don't need the hour long origin story to get people to fall in love with the characters. You like the Turtles for who they are now, not for their origins.
I will say I was surprised recently to see that the 90s disney movies don't quite hold up for me. The music is still beautiful but my friend and I found ourselves fast forwarding through everything else. They were kids movies, period. And i got tired of the girl who wants more stuff even as a...
The Muppets (2011) was the best that's been around in a long time and I enjoyed it, but I agree that the old Muppet humor wasn't quite there (though it looks like some of the cut scenes might have fixed that).
"Character actor" is a classic Hollywood term for actors who specialized in a specific type of character that audiences enjoyed seeing again and again (remember this was before VCRs, lol).
The thing is other movies have proven you don't always need a huge origin story that takes up half the movie. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring got the prologue out of the way quickly and pretty much jumped into the story. And it was hugely successful, even with people who had never read...
Oh cool, I didn't know about that, thanks for sharing! Yeah the Beatles were never too hard to understand in their films or interviews. And at the time they definitely broaden the American audience's outlook on the British. I actually saw this really corny '60s teen movie with a bunch of...
The Beatles were actually asked this when they first came to America. They tried to explain that theirs was just a different English accent than Americans were used to hearing. I believe there's a clip floating around somewhere where Paul explains that they (for instance) say the word grass...
Lol, yeah that's a good example of how society changed. In the '50s and early '60s it was acceptable for little boys to play with guns and cartoon violence was still allowed to be funny.
Great blog entry, thanks for sharing! :excited:
Actually I'd consider Mokey a pioneering female character on children's TV as well, though for different reasons. Female characters are too often portrayed as ten times smarter than the males, which as a woman I personally find boring and...
