I love that E.Mayhem quote. WE should have our own RHLC chant or catchphrase or something!! That would be soo groovy.

Put that down on our list of things to do!

Now this is interesting...the Muppet Musique website has just posted songs and sketches from The Muppet Show Season 2. If you listen to the Vet's Hospital sketches (Don Knotts, Rich Little, Nancy Walker) you can hear the evolution of Janice's voice! It starts out as a typical Richard female voice and slowly becomes a Valley Girl.

Yeah, that's interesting. And it's not a slight change either; it's pretty distinct!

Yeah, you're right. We talked about this before on the thread. But for those of you who don't feel like trying to find it ::raises hand::, the MC Muppet Show guides discuss how Janice was a hand-me-down puppet for Richard in the 2nd season. He was the only main Muppet performer who wasn't a member of the Electric Mayhem. Looks like it took a few episodes for him to find the character's "motivation."

I always find it interesting that with Janice, they didn't go all the way with the Valley Girl image. You know, being vain and materialistic. But then again, they already had that with Piggy. And they couldn't have both female characters being that way! So Janice is kind of half Valley Girl, half Flower child/hippie. Though maybe that's how the hippies girls were in California at the time, the whole Haight-Asbury enviornment.

No, the vain materialistic Valley Girl persona would have been all wrong for the Electric Mayhem's own guitar-swinging sister. She's too cool for that.

I can sometimes envision Richard sitting alone in the workshop late at night, staring intently at the Janice puppet, and thinking, "All right, Janice, talk to me, sweetie. Tell me who you are. Where you're from." Trying to "channel" her character or something like that.

I raised my hand too. Literally, sitting in my chair.
 Just thaught you should know how wacky and random I am.
About the hippy thing, I think you might be right. Besides, she's a muppet! Even Piggy, and I'm sure even Pepe have their good sides. Then again, that's probably just my nurturing, motherly side talking, because I have always been of the belief that all the muppets have hearts of gold, and are full of virtue, and could never seriously hurt anyone. I'm sure some, if not all of the muppeteers would disagree with me...
