I guess the whole deal was just a case of "out with old and in with the new".

But in this instance, the 'Munks were--despite the use of realistic CGI animals--based on the original Chipmunks of the 60's, moreso than they were based on their 80's incarnation.

But the 80s version was a more fleshed out version of the 60s incarnation... at least it was suppsed to be.

Well, the 80's version did flesh out some things, but it also made the 'Munks more...tame than they were in the previous years. Sort of like how Mickey Mouse has changed over the years.
