I gotta agree with Cory a little bit here. I think the Oscar nominations are overly predictable and disappointing.

And to the person who didn't like Bowling for Columbine, all I can say is pull your head in. You're totally not paying attention to the film if you think it's taking advantage of the Columbine shooting. It's an amazing accomplishment that shows how ****** up America can be, and deserves to win in the Best Documentary category.

My rant on these disappointing (as usual) Oscar nominations is over.
Yeah, its just my personal thing. I absolutely cannot stand musicals(cept south park, rocky horror, and parts of moulin rouge...but 'traditional' musicals...oh gosh, the horror)
I also cannot stand those retriement home flicks(ie: the hours, far from heaven, iris, etc) or those 19th century period films. That has to be the most dreadful period in history to film, with those big hats and rhetorical quipping snorefest dialogues. However there are some exceptions to me. I loved in the Bedroom and About Schmidt, despite those falling under Granny matinee flicks.
I also enjoy restoration period films(mostly for the lavish costumes) Yeah LOTR TTT should rightfully be bestowed with the most oscar nods.

As for Bowling for Columbine, I can understand where that poster was coming from(given his city) But yeah, I was very skeptical about the film...then I saw it and was blown away. That has to be th emost earth shattering, powerful, and thought provoking documentary Ive ever seen...and Ive seen a lot.

So sorry that 16 Candles, Coming To America, Mac and Me, and all those other fabulous 80's pictures couldn't make a comeback for this year's Oscar fest.
It's funny, Ive never seen any of those attrocious flicks and never plan on seeing em. ^_^

Yeah, that is your personal "thing". My sister would totally roll her eyes and think you so uncultured, unappreciative, and ignorant of film history if she saw that statement.

Yeah, thats the thing. My friends and I avidly seek out and go to or rent the most obscure indie or foreign films. Weve seen an endless amount of artsy fartsy films most people wouldnt have the patience for. But if there is one genre besides the Western, that my friends and I can agree on that induces a primordial squirming and uncontrollable urge to curl up in a fetal position and pray for sweet mercy...its the musical. Theres just something a bit too festive and stomach churning for my tastes. The Music Man, Moulin Rouge, Singin' in the Rain, Evita, Hindu Indian films...just something about spontaneously busting into song and dance every 5 minutes that makes me want to spontaneously combust.

Then again, my friends and I saw the most avant garde experimental musical ever called the American Astronaut.
Though Im sure shoe string budget midnight cult indie musicals thatd make Ed Wood look like Lord of the Rings arent in favor with the Academy.

I dont think to not have the nerves of steel to sit through a musical is being any less of a film appreciatianist.

Well, as noted I like the occational non traditionalist musical(like Rocky Horror, South Park, Muppet movies, etc) The traditional Hollywood musicals make me wanna run for cover.

They're like "I Love Lucy". Ya may not like it, but ya have to respect its place in television history.

I agree with Nate. This is an interesting year for the Oscars. Last year was kind of a snooze fest for me (except for the highly competitive Animated Film Oscar).

I love musicals and there haven't been that many non-animated musicals in recent years (Evita, Moulin Rouge, Chicago). It's nice to see them represented this year. I hope we see more of them in the future.

I don't see much that I would change about the noms. I do think that they should have limited Best Animated Film nominations to three like last year. I guess they are trying to legitimize the category by filling all the slots. Ice Age, Spirited Away and possibly Lilo and Stitch should be recognized. (That's the order I handicap them with the voters) Spirit Stallion... was a beautiful but rather dull and Treasure Planet didn't seem to please critics, audiences or the studio.

I'm pulling for Chicago or The Two Towers this year. I hope they spread the joy around to all different films. I just hate sweeps. Gets kind of boring.

The one thing that did irritate me was the bit criticism surrounding an Oscar ceremony around war time. Whatever side you're on, I believe everyone should support an Oscar telecast. Entertainment one of America's greatest natural resources and it's the perfect time to celebrate that. Respectfully, of course. Get ready for political statments this year. If Susan Sarandon presents, you can bet she'll say something.

So, snoozefest? Absolutely not. I actually expect fireworks this year. Interesting noms, political statments and no Debbie Allen choreography. It should be great!

LOL! Theres actually idiots criticizing the decision to have Oscars during war time? Idiots! These were the same people that didnt think there should be any violent movies in the wake of 9/11(every movie from Training Day to From **** got a "how could they release this in the wake of 9/11???" review from some critics) So I guess to that way of thinking, there shouldnt be the Oscars because Bush decided he was bored and wanted some war? Bullocks.

Well Jamie...you mentioned that last year was a snoozefest academy wise. I say its this year. I will say the 2000 one was prolly one of my faves...The Matrix picked up the second most awards(4) next to Americna Beauty(which got 5)

Yeah but the difference is that American Beauty is Cinematic ART. The Matrix is no such thing. It's awards were based on special effects (they won for Visual Effects, Sound Editing, Sound, and Film Editing. Those were the only awards they took home). Now while I'm not taking away from those awards, as they contribute to all film as a whole, they don't mean its a picture that is worthy of the oil it took to print it on celluloid.

Here is a link to all the nominations from the Oscars main site.

Oscar Nominations

Every year I do an online poll for the Oscar cast. I think I'll have to include all the MCers in this years festivities.
