The academy is still too conservative to give it to him.

I think it will be down to U2 and Kander and Ebb. I'm pulling for the later duo, for obvious reasons.

Come on Cory, this is one of the best years for the Oscars in quite awhile. Not only are most of the nominations films that a great majority of the avid film going population has seen, but they are also incredible pieces of celluloid cinema.
Dear god almighty its a cringe fest. Musicals, period costume films, sentimental Hallmark ****** commercial flicks, chick flicks, Granny matinee flicks...all those films critics like Roeper get a sitffy for. ...films like Iris, Affair of the Necklace, Importence of Being Earnest...oh dear gosh I wanna hide...
Man, I'd almost rather see Bad Company and Crocadile Hunter get an award...
Sadly real art films like Memento, One Hour Photo, Waking Life, etc never seem to get the rewards they deserve.

I do hope About Schmidt wins in some categories...that was an astonishing film. But My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Pianist, and all those "the summer rose pedals we once had" Jane Austen adaptation type films...*reaches for barf bag*

As for Roman Polanski...I think Hollywood has enough sick degenerate perverts like R Kelly, Pete Townsend, Pee Wee, Jeffrey Jones, and Micheal Jackson to fill the void.

If the Oscars give the best documentary oscar to that piece of overproduced propogagnda wich exploits a tragedy that, well I did not see it personally, I saw the aftereffects of (My freshman year there started at Columbine the fall of 1999, I was living in California at the time of the shootings), I will be upset.
Man, didnt notice ya were from Littleton. However I wanna say that the film is a champion for what happened. I mean in the course of the film on camera, they get the corporate headquarters of HQ to ban automatic rifl/handgun bullets.
Its really an astonishing film that is very sensitive to what happened, but goes beyond that to illustrate whats going on with terrorism, and gun violence in America.

So sorry that 16 Candles, Coming To America, Mac and Me, and all those other fabulous 80's pictures couldn't make a comeback for this year's Oscar fest.

Now now, My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a very good movie I thought. Hardly barf bag inducing! But everyone is entitled to their opinions:smile: I haven't seen enough of the nominated shows to be able to have an opinon about most of them--does anyone know where they're posted at all?---but I did see Chicago and while I liked it and was very impressed by everyone's singing voices, I was not as wowed as I was expecting to be. I think it was because I had such high expectations for it based on what everyone had told me and then when I saw it, it just didn't seem to be as phenominal as I thought it would be. But the Oscars are a tradition for my best friend and I and regardless of what's nominated, I can't wait to watch!

Some o' those are fun, though---rully outta the ordinary.

As for Nate's list, it sounds like he sure gave you plenty reason enough to tune in...I gotta agree, it doesn't sound borin' with all that stuff goin' on.

I gotta agree with Cory a little bit here. I think the Oscar nominations are overly predictable and disappointing.

The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers received the biggest snub. How can a film so epic in scale receive a Best Picture nomination, but not nominate the director Peter Jackson. The same thing happened last year when Baz Luhrman was ignored for Moulin Rouge. It's completely ridiculous. It's also nuts that The Two Towers didn't receive nominations for last years winners Andrew Lesnie (cinematography) and Howard Shore (music), because the Academy considers their roles continuations of the first film. How the **** can the movie and special effects be nominated then? Crazy....I really hope the Academy rewards The Return of the King next year with all the awards that the films have deserved.

Martin Scorsese's nomination is another point I'd like to mention. I worship this guy. He's my all-time favourite filmmaker. And while I loved Gangs of New York, it's not the best work he's done. I feel the Academy will honour him this year, though it'll be more of a lifetime achievement award than necessarily a deserved gong. Much like Pacino winning for Scent of a Woman, or Newman for The Color of Money. I hope Marty wins, but I can't help thinking he should have won for Raging Bull or Goodfellas.

Pedro Almodavar's nomination is also strange. The academy pulled the same stunt last year, nominating a respected but complete outsider director in David Lynch. Pedro has no chance of winning.

The one category I'm pretty happy with is Best Supporting Actor. Some of my faves are there in Ed Harris, John C. Reilly, Chris Walken and Chris Cooper. But I was disappointed there was no room for Dennis Quaid or even Richard Gere, who I'm not usually a big fan of. But I thought he stole the show in Chicago, yet he's basically the only actor to not get nominated. Makes no sense.

The animation category is nuts. Let's just nominate every animated film that's come out? Stupid. Lilo & Stich should win (it was great), although I hear Spirited Away is fantastic.

Eminem deserves to win the Best Song category, but I don't think it will happen. Still, it's the best song out of the choices selected.

The Best Picture category is quite strong this year, I'm just disappointed with most other categories. Chicago will most likely sweep the awards. It's a fantastic film, but I don't know if I think it's a Best Picture winner.

I can honestly say I will lose even more faith in the Oscars if Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't win for Gangs of New York. It's easily one of the best performances I've ever seen.

I'm happy Steve Martin is back as well. I love the wild and crazy guy.

And to the person who didn't like Bowling for Columbine, all I can say is pull your head in. You're totally not paying attention to the film if you think it's taking advantage of the Columbine shooting. It's an amazing accomplishment that shows how ****** up America can be, and deserves to win in the Best Documentary category.

My rant on these disappointing (as usual) Oscar nominations is over.
