Michael Earl is teaching some TV puppetry workshops in LA. Check out his site at http://puppetschool.com for more info.
You might also want to join the LA Guild, since it's not too far away and many of the best West Coast puppeteers are associated with it. I know a few of the puppeteers...
Actually, you can boil fur in order to treat it. I am not an expert in this, but have seen it done very successfully (for example, these Swazzle puppets). That being said, anytime you die, distress or treat any textile there are a not of variables involved, including what the fur is made of and...
Sorry to hear about your wife Steve. That's terrible (and all-too-common) news these days.
I haven't done build-for-hire work for many years now, but based on what friends who do have told me Ebay works best as a loss leader that leads to private commissions over the long term. They don't...
Does anyone have a list of the puppeteers who work on this? Aside from Andy Heath and those of you who have posted, I'm curious to know who else does the show.
Thanks!
Hi all,
About a year ago I stopped updating my PuppetVision Blog about puppetry in film, video and the web due to a combination of illness in my family and a desire to spend less time writing about puppetry and more time actually doing puppetry.
Last week I started updating PuppetVision...
Steve's (Melonpool's) advice is good...shoot a demo and if your college TV station won't do it, then do it yourself on YouTube.
If you're serious about fund-raising, I did a blog post recently that you might be interested in -...
There are other options. At the shop I work in we use silicone molds and latex is also common. Plaster will often work too, although it's not an ideal medium imho and some people are allergic to the dust.
A very good book on the subject of mold making and casting is "The Prop Builder's Molding...
I used to run Puppetbuilding.com but someone bought it out from under me last year. I still have the pattern for this, if you can send me a private message with your email address I can send it to you.
Just to clarify, generally speaking producers are not unionized in the North American film & television industry, at least not for producing. They might be a union member in another capacity. For example, a writer/producer in TV might be a member of the WGA because they write for their show...
I don't have statistics, but I don't think there has really been a significant increase. What has changed (I think anyway) is that thanks to the internet and YouTube you end up seeing a lot more commercials with puppets than you used to.
Not that I'd be complaining if there actually has been...
The issue I think is that while there is a demand, it's a niche. I'm sure that the market for Antron fleece is not as big as the market for, say, silks and linens. It can take several months for a textile mill to custom weave fabric so that they have been out for so long is not surprising...
This is a tough one, at least in order to do it legally. In order to perform a song legally or even playback a recording publicly you need to license it and/or pay royalties to whomever owns the copyright on that song. Everywhere you hear music - television, radio, professional stage shows, even...
