Where do you get your latex?

At work we usually buy in large quantities because it's cheaper that way, but if you're looking for smaller quantities, most art supply stores carry latex. It's usually found in the section devoted to molding and casting supplies.

    My Progress

I like the Star Trek-ish black lit displays. That's very cool.

    Puppets From The Unraku Workshop

About two and a half feet tall standing up if I remember correctly.

    Puppets From The Unraku Workshop

Her arms and legs are operated by rods, but her head is operated like a hand and rod puppet. She's meant to be performed Bunraku-style by multiple puppeteers.

    Puppets From The Unraku Workshop

I thought I would share this with everyone, a few photos of different types of puppets built by the Unraku Workshop in Toronto - http://www.flickr.com/photos/unraku/sets/72157624827023753/

Question about Building Faux Tree Props

Axtell sells animatronic "hands free" puppets that will perform either via radio control or pre-recorded animation - http://www.axtell.com/custom.html (scroll down to see an example of one of these). The Two Towers Extended Edition DVD has a lot of "making of" features about Treebeard from Lord...

Question about Building Faux Tree Props

Oh I assumed you were just decorating it, I mean in some places there are very strict codes about what you can use to decorate a beam with. In the shop where I work, we're not allowed to suspend things from certain pipes/beams or cover them because of fire code regulations. Bureaucracy. Ugh...

Question about Building Faux Tree Props

You could try chicken wire, which would work well if you're going to spray foam over top of it. If you can get your hands on the Special Edition of "The Two Towers" DVD I think they have an extended feature on that talking about how trees were built for The Lord of the Rings. Probably goes...

Potentially Opening my own Puppet Theater

Something else to look in to are the zoning regulations for theatres. For example, here in Toronto, Famous People Players opened a new theatre for black light puppetry and reportedly had to spend several hundred thousand dollars in order to comply with all of the zoning requirements the city...

Potentially Opening my own Puppet Theater

This will probably be much harder to do than you think. Sometimes it's not that hard to start, but can be very difficult to maintain. Like starting any business, there are a lot of hidden costs you may not anticipate - seating, zoning regulations, insurance, etc. A really good idea if you're...

    Books on Animatronic Puppet Building?

Check out the videos at this link - http://www.fxsupply.com/videos/videos.html - I haven't dealt with that company or seen most of those videos myself, but they might be useful. An older video that was supposed to be very good is "Mechanics for SPFX Make-up and Mechanical Puppetry". It was...

What are the Pros and Cons of Latex Puppets?

I think Axtell has information on their website about how to best care for their puppets if you do a search for it.

    Any Tips for Arm Fatigue?

Arm fatigue is a problem for all puppeteers I think. The solution is to develop long term muscular endurance. The easiest way to do that is probably to just rehearse a lot. Other than that, you can look in to resistance training and other forms of exercise designed to increase endurance...

What do you think of Pavlov's Puppets?

I've always been curious about their puppets, some of them look really good. I know they cost more money than some people have, but I think their prices are actually quite reasonable, especially since Blink says they are well made.

    What gives you motivation/inspiration?

I try to avoid anything puppet-related for inspiration (that's not a hard and fast rule though) and try to read a lot of non-fiction on everything from history to animation to rap music. I find that when you look outside puppetry for inspiration, you end up discovering new things about puppetry...

    Antron bolt purchase

Really? That's great news. How many yards do they have in a bolt?

    Antron bolt purchase

It is of course a good idea to double check, but I doubt you'll be able to secure Antron that way any faster than through Georgia Stage. The mill can't produce enough for them and they are presumably the largest customer, so I would imagine a smaller customer with a later order will have to wait...

    Better Way To Build Heads

In terms of lasting longer, I think that's more of an issue of how you store and use puppets. I agree with Melonpool that carving is good for one-off puppets, not so good for characters that have to be built over and over again.
