    Puppets & Sets in progress

A set in progress (will be finished tomorrow). Was rehearsing in/under it tonight and I'm especially fond of it - http://twitpic.com/12n76u

    Disney Job Update

Hey Jim, wow is this an old thread...eight years old in fact! Since it's such an old thread, I'd like to add to my original comments re: puppeteers at Disney theme parks... At the time I wrote that most puppeteers I had met who worked with Disney did appear to have overwhelmingly negative...

Is This the Fur Used for Abby Cadabby?

    Very true!

Is This the Fur Used for Abby Cadabby?

I think what GoshPosh means is that they tend to custom dye and treat fur so they can get exactly the colour and look they want. So you're not likely to walk in to a store and find many of the fabrics that the Muppets are made with because most aren't bought off the shelf.

Where to Buy some good Puppets

The old adage is true...you get what you pay for. $100 is actually a very good price for decent moving mouth hand puppet.

Yes, Mathieu is a mad puppet genius! There are no movement tests yet, but this is a pic of the (mostly) sculpted body - http://twitpic.com/1015fs

    Bunsen Honeydew mouth

Yeah, my first thought would be to carve this, but either way I would try a smaller mouth plate. Maybe something operated by just the puppeteer's thumb and index and middle fingers. You could also design something wide the in back, but narrow in the front as PracticeCactus suggested.

    Bunsen Honeydew mouth

One more question...how is the head constructed? I'm just trying to picture this in my head.

    Bunsen Honeydew mouth

Are you patterning the mouth so that it is naturally open or closed?

After that was posted I realized that it was the wrong take of "Unraku" on the bumper, but I kinda like it.

    Bunsen Honeydew mouth

I'm pretty sure that Bunsen's head was sculpted (or at least the original puppet's was). You can sculpt heads from a block of foam, then sand them down to get them smooth. A belt sander works best for sanding, but you have to be very careful using it. You can also create heads like that by...

Just us...I think. I don't really know much about the Jewish group unfortunately.

    Puppets & Sets in progress

Oh no, there is more than one. This is the Jewish group looking for puppeteers - http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/yrk/med/1529479916.html I was told there was also someone recruiting for a Fringe show recently too, but couldn't find that one. It seems to have expired or been taken down.

There have been some ongoing auditions/puppeteer training, although there is also a Jewish group in the GTA recruiting puppeteers so I'm not sure which ad you saw.

    Free Puppetry Workshop Next Weekend

Unfortunately, taping it and posting it to YouTube isn't really practical because there are close to 20 people involved and they have to all consent to being videotaped. That's a little more paperwork than I'm prepared to do on a Sunday I'm afraid! I'll definitely make sure notes get posted...

    Free Puppetry Workshop Next Weekend

Hi all, A few puppeteers friends and I do a basic "intro to puppetry" workshop in Toronto every January. This year it's taking place next weekend. It's a full day workshop. The first half of the day will be spent on some basic on camera exercises, explaining how monitors work and basic...

    Puppets & Sets in progress

Hi all, I've been working on a fun project with a bunch of other talented puppeteers/builders since December. Can't post too much about it just yet, but we are posting pictures and video of work-in-progress almost daily (well, Monday to Friday). If you're on twitter follow @unraku or visit...

    Puppeteering tutorials

Kate Brehm has a good series of videos about puppetry on eHow.com (I think they're also on YouTube) - http://www.ehow.com/videos-on_3100_puppet-performance-tips.html

Anyone used papercraft programs for patterning?

I played with some of this software a few years ago and it was OK, but not terribly useful. In my experience you end up with patterns that are way more complicated than they need to be. If you want to learn how to make patterns I think you would do much better buying the Playsoup "From Sketch To...
