I really thought that Mike Hucabee would have made a great president. He had a very interesting tax plan, and I also think he would have handled the war alright.
Well at least he has his own TV show now! :halo:

(I mean this as just a light hearted joke, no big deal)

As his first act in office, can Obama ask HIT to put out Season 4 of Fraggle Rock separately?

On a different topic - I am very disappointed in Prop 8 passing in California. [For those of you that don't care to read about his issue, you should skip to the next post] I have long felt that homophobia is the last remaining acceptable prejudice in this country. Religious organizations and households are free to believe and teach as they choose, but should not make restrictive laws on others. Preventing my partner and me from getting married is not the same as preventing murder, theft or general mischief that transcends a particular religious dogma. Also, the horrifically misleading "They are coming for your children" sorts of ads in support of Prop 8 were largely supported by the Mormon Church. I believe their tax exempt status should be reviewed if they have that much tithe money to spend on political legislation.

:grouchy: It is the country club politics of, "Our organization means nothing if you can join!" sort of thinking that panders to the ickiest parts of the human condition. However, gay marriage should never be a local issue. I firmly believe it is a national one. How can I build a life with someone in one state and have none of it recognized in another if the economy requires job relocation? The signing of contracts for medical benefits, property rights and domestic unions are lengthy, insufficient and insulting. They also can vary vastly from place to place.

Straight couples can get hitched in a Vegas drive-though chapel/burger joint. This has never been some “Sanctity of Marriage” issue. Bogus! Countries like Ireland make it vary difficult to divorce and acquire numerous marriages as in the US. :search: The real issue is that religious conservative parents have no desire to explain gay marriage to their kids - especially their disapproval of it in a way that doesn't make them appear intolerant. No matter what side of the issue you fall on, that is the real center of the conflict. Everything else is just noise. When the problem is adequately addressed the solution for it can become clear.

The tide will change on this gay rights issue, just not yet. It was such a close call. I still can't believe that our President Elect actually mentioned gay men and women in his historical acceptance speech last night. He didn't have to do that. It clearly wouldn't help him in the larger picture. That's a little bit of hope I can take with me in making last night's victories more sweet than bitter-sweet. :sympathy:
I heard about Proposition 8. I knew by this morning at 7 am the votes were still being counted.

I'm sorry that this propostion did pass. I relate to what gays are facing right now to what blacks faced in the 50's and 60's and what women faced in the 20's.

I have no problem with gays. I had a gay high school band teacher. Never bothered me. Everyone he taught did not care and were never uncomfortbale around him. I've had a few gay college teachers/professors. I did not have a problem for them either.

I don't get where the hate is with not allowing gays to get married?

You know, I'm sure 50 years ago, people were saying blacks will not get equal rights and that it would be against "God". I'm sure people in the 1920's and before said that women would not get the right to vote because it might be against what "God" wanted.

If proposition 8 did not pass, would straight people wake up the next day feeling all bad inside just because people who like the same sex are now going to get married? I know I wouldn't and frankly, if you're happy then by all means be happy and marry that person you love.

Marriage in the country is not strong as it once was. The divorce rate is higher than it was 40 years ago. Half of all marriages end in divorce now. And as stated before, people can get married in Vegas in crummy churches and so forth. Not exactly a dream wedding if you ask me. There is also more evidence that people now a days, especially younger people, are living together and not marrying for various reasons. Obviously with these statements, heterosexual marriages aren't as strong as they once were. So I say let gays get married. Heterosexual marriages are about as sour as a lemon now.

Hopefully marriage eventually becomes a more respected institution, for all concerned.

Yup, this whole economy thing can be solved if people just bought more Muppets stuff!

Maybe they're afraid statistics will show that homosexual marriages would last longer than those heterosexual marriage at the 30 minute drive-thru in Vegas? :embarrassed:

The very idea of even certain fundamental rights for gays seemed like a dream when I came out over 17 years ago so I'm still trying to look at this setback as sort of a win for the concept even being this tangible. Marriage, unions or whatever they'll be called is perceived as an eventuality by most political scholars. The question is really when. I have finally met someone that I would consider marrying and last night he actually cried on my shoulder. He couldn't be too happy for the Obama win. I just see it all in a different perspective.

The term marriage has actually been co-opted by popular extremist groups in this country as primarily a Christian brand name. However, these groups even frown on civil unions. It was said that about half of the Republicans at the 2008 National Convention believed in marriage and/or civil unions for gay people so I think the tide is changing. It is often thought that the ones who shout the loudest have the largest numbers, but sometimes they're just loud. (And not every Christian, just as not every gay person, thinks exactly the same.)

I still see it as a disgrace how lightly marriage is taken in this country. My parents have been together for over 40 years and I never had a doubt that they would be. I think all people should have access to that sort of recognized lifelong commitment. I do wonder how much Obama is going to help that along. I doubt much in this first term. But we can rest assured he will not allow some sort of nationwide prop 8.

Bringing this back to topic, here's a cool mural that has been traveling around the country in this "bill-posting" style. There was one near an urban playground in my area. This is not it, but it is a good picture I found on the web.
