This morning, I was 20 miles into my commute to work when my best friend called and said he had hit a girl with his truck while she was on her bike. I turned around and headed to see him at the accident site.
The full story goes like this: my bud works the night shift at Target and was taking the scenic route home when he was blinded by the sun (it was around 6AM EST) and plowed into this poor girl at about forty miles an hour. At the time the ambulance carried her off, we knew for sure of at least a broken arm and broken leg. She was unconscious but breathing, there's the possibilty of a few cracked ribs too. Thank God that (at this point in time as far as we know) she wasn't killed instantly. A girl in her mid-twenties verses a 95' Ford Trail Blazer have troubling odds.
The police were very understanding stating that the girl was on the wrong side of the road heading into traffic and for some reason went into the middle of the road (many people don't realize it, but pedestrians on bicycles have to obey traffic laws too). Plus several witnesses gave the same story my bud did and for those reasons, he avoided a ticket and most likely won't be fined, have to go to court or do jail time.
Needless to say; my best friend feels horrible and very upset. I'd ask as my online Muppet family that you keep my bud Tim in your prayers, as well as the health and safety of the unfortunate young lady he hit.
I was the only one who was able to show up at the scene of the accident and be there for my friend, so I'm thankful for that. I took him back to our place and my wife and I did our best to help him out. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and prayers, guys. I talk to him about all youse' guys often, and he thinks yer' an okay bunch.

Hey there Vic, wow, what a story. I will definately be praying for your friend and also for the girl he hit. I hope everything works out for the best. It was good that you were able to be there for your friend, I'm sure I would've done the same if it was my friend. Keep us posted on how things go.

Oh gosh...

I will certainly be thinking about your friend, and the girl he hit. I do hope everything works out alright. I think it will. I just sort of have a hunch that everything will be fine.

Oh my, that's a sad story, Dave. As an atheist, I may not be able to pray, but I'll keep your pal and the girl in my thoughts. I'll soon be up with my uncle and aunt (who are two fundamentalist Christians), and I'm sure they'd be glad to pray. I hope everything turns out alright.

That is a sad yarn. I sure will pray for your friend and that little girl. I love children so I pray to God that she will pull through.

Thanks so much every body; your thoughts and prayers mean so much. Unfortunately, I was wrong on a couple things, first being that the young lady was in her early forties and she might be in worse shape then just a few busted bones. Tim made the paper:
Published in the Asbury Park Press 06/24/05 said:
Bicyclist struck, severely injured
LONG BRANCH: A 41-year-old Third Avenue woman suffered severe injuries Thursday morning when she was struck by a Ford Explorer while riding her bicycle, police said.
Graciela Andrade was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, and remained in the intensive care unit in critical condition Thursday afternoon, Detective Lt. Bruce Johantgen said.
The accident and investigation closed part of Route 36, between Branchport and Myrtle avenues, for about three hours, Johantgen said.
Police were called to the scene about 6 a.m. It appears that Andrade was riding her bicycle west on the eastbound side of Route 36, Johantgen said.
At the same time, Timothy Bengston, 27, of Ocean Grove was driving his Ford Explorer east on Route 36. When Andrade tried to cross the highway, she was struck by the vehicle, Johantgen said.
Andrade was on her way to work at Monmouth Park racetrack, according to police.
Police are asking anyone who may have seen the accident to contact Thomas Hueston or Cesare Simonelli of the Traffic Bureau at (732) 571-5648.

Your continued prayer and support is greatly appreciated.

That's rough. I hope she makes through this okay and you and your bud will definitely be in my thoughts, Vic. It's a terrible thing, but hopefully bikers can learn from Graciela's mistake and follow the proper traffic laws to avoid future accidents.
