This morning, I was 20 miles into my commute to work when my best friend called and said he had hit a girl with his truck while she was on her bike. I turned around and headed to see him at the accident site.
The full story goes like this: my bud works the night shift at Target and was taking the scenic route home when he was blinded by the sun (it was around 6AM EST) and plowed into this poor girl at about forty miles an hour. At the time the ambulance carried her off, we knew for sure of at least a broken arm and broken leg. She was unconscious but breathing, there's the possibilty of a few cracked ribs too. Thank God that (at this point in time as far as we know) she wasn't killed instantly. A girl in her mid-twenties verses a 95' Ford Trail Blazer have troubling odds.
The police were very understanding stating that the girl was on the wrong side of the road heading into traffic and for some reason went into the middle of the road (many people don't realize it, but pedestrians on bicycles have to obey traffic laws too). Plus several witnesses gave the same story my bud did and for those reasons, he avoided a ticket and most likely won't be fined, have to go to court or do jail time.
Needless to say; my best friend feels horrible and very upset. I'd ask as my online Muppet family that you keep my bud Tim in your prayers, as well as the health and safety of the unfortunate young lady he hit.
I was the only one who was able to show up at the scene of the accident and be there for my friend, so I'm thankful for that. I took him back to our place and my wife and I did our best to help him out. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and prayers, guys. I talk to him about all youse' guys often, and he thinks yer' an okay bunch.
