All right, here's chapter five. I won't have a chance to write again until Monday, so hopefully this will tide you all over through the weekend.
Chapter Five:
A few days passed after Sunny’s death and things slowly returned to normal in Fraggle Rock. Mokey continued gaining strength back with each passing day. Boober sort of buried himself in laundry.
Red kept her secret. It was hard because she even kept it a secret from Gobo. However, she knew it wouldn’t be long before she wouldn’t be able to keep it a secret any longer because her appearance would give it away.
Wembley and Lou kind of shied away from the group for awhile, they were afraid that being around Artie would make Mokey and Boober sad.
Gobo started to become frustrated with the situation and decided that they all needed to just get together the way they always used to and just have some fun. He also noticed that his wife seemed different somehow and he just couldn’t put his finger on why. Still he proposed that they all get together for dinner as they had the day before Artie’s ceremony and he was pleased that everyone agreed to come.
For a change, Gobo and Red hosted the event at their cave. Wembley, Lou and Artie were the first to arrive. Wembley brought Artie over to play with Gobo and Lou went over to talk to Red.
“Red, I was thinking. Remember when we were talking at Artie’s ceremony, right before, well you know?” asked Lou.
“Yeah,” said Red slowly.
“We never got to finish that conversation. You said you were feeling different and I started to say that I felt different when I found out I was carrying Artie,” said Lou.
“What’s your point?” asked Red.
“I was just wondering if there’s something you’re not telling us,” said Lou.
“Nope, not at all. Maybe it was something I ate that day,” said Red too quickly and then turned back to the stove. Lou looked at her with a puzzled look and then turned back to the guys.
“Hello, can we come in?” came Mokey’s soft voice from outside the cave.
“Of course! Come on in!” exclaimed Red a little too cheerfully as she ran over to give her friend a hug.
“Smells good in here, I didn’t know you had it in you Red,” said Mokey.
“Well, I can make a few things here and there,” said Red.
Gobo stood up to join them and noticed Boober hanging back.
“Hey Boober, you gonna stand there all day or come in here?” asked Gobo. Boober was staring at Artie.
“Boober? Come on honey,” said Mokey.
“Oh, right, sorry,” said Boober snapping out of his thoughts. Wembley looked at Lou with concern.
“You know, maybe this was a bad idea, we can go,” said Wembley.
“No, don’t worry, we’re fine,” said Mokey. Boober didn’t say anything but shook his head in agreement. Everyone could see that he was still uncomfortable.
Lou put Artie on the floor with a blanket and then the friends sat down at the table to eat their dinner. The tension in the room could be cut with a knife. Lou kept eyeballing Red suspiciously which caused Red to twitch in her seat. Wembley nervously twiddled his thumbs between bites of food. Gobo was watching Boober with concern. Boober pushed the food around the plate without really eating anything. Mokey kept conversation going by talking about anything that came to mind. This was anything but a normal dinner.
Finally, they all just ate in silence and each stared at their own plate. After some time had passed Mokey and Red both decided to break the silence at the same time.
“I’m going to have a Fraglet!” exclaimed Red.
“I’m going to go away for awhile,” proclaimed Mokey at the same time.
No one knew what to react to first.
“You’re going to leave? Why?” asked Red to Mokey. Boober stood up and walked to the door.
“I need to get away from here for awhile. Boober and I need a break from each other after what happened. I’m still healing both physically and emotionally. I may look fine, but I really need get away from here, where it happened,” said Mokey.
“We shouldn’t have brought over Artie, it’s our fault,” said Wembley.
“No, really, I wanted to see you all again before I go, this was good,” said Mokey.
“But where are you going?” asked Lou quietly.
Gobo was silent through the entire conversation. Could what Red just said be really true? Were they actually going to have a Fraglet?
The conversation about Mokey continued as Gobo stood up and approached Red.
“Did I hear you right? Are we going to have a Fraglet?” asked Gobo. Once again the group became silent.
“Um, yeah. I’m sorry, I didn’t want to say anything in light of what’s happened, but yes, we’re having a Fraglet,” said Red.
“Woo-hoo!” exclaimed Gobo as he picked up Red and whirled her around.
“Congratulations you guys,” said Mokey.
“Oh Mokey. You just can’t leave. I’ll miss you and I don’t think I can go through this without you! I’m scared!” exclaimed Red running over to her friend.
“Red, you’ll be fine. You have Gobo. I won’t be gone forever, I just need to go for awhile,” said Mokey.
“You still haven’t told us where you’re going,” said Gobo.
“I don’t want to say. Trust me; I’m going to be fine. Please, just let me do this,” said Mokey.
Everyone looked at her and decided there was no changing her mind.
“I’m going to see if Boober’s all right. We love you Mokey, come back to us soon,” said Gobo giving his friend a hug and then leaving the cave.
“Take care of yourself out there, wherever you’re going,” said Lou. Wembley picked up Artie and walked with Lou out of the cave.
“Mokey, remember what happened when I ran away? It was so stupid!” said Red.
“Red, that was different. You actually ran away, you didn’t tell us you were leaving and we worried to death about you. I’m just going for a little while, I promise,” said Mokey.
“What about Boober? Do you still love him?” asked Red.
“Yes I do still love him. But I need to do this away from him. He doesn’t understand that right now, but I hope someday he will and I know in time he’ll forgive me,” said Mokey.
“There’s nothing I can do to change your mind is there?” asked Red.
“No, I’m sorry Red. I promise I’ll be back in time to see your Fraglet grow up big and strong. You just take care of yourself,” said Mokey.
“Ok, you do the same. Hurry back,” said Red.
“I love you Red,” said Mokey.
“I love you too,” said Red. The two friends embraced and then Mokey left the cave. Red sat up on her bed and sobbed. Gobo found her there a few minutes later.
“Hey. It’s going to be all right,” he said giving her a hug.
“She’s my best friend, she’s like a sister to me,” said Red.
“I know. It really will be ok. And guess what? We’re going to have a Fraglet!” said Gobo excitedly.
“Yeah,” said Red softly. For some reason she just couldn’t share his enthusiasm.
