Chapter Five
As Gobo nearly dragged Red through the caverns, she was not speaking at all. Having everyone take over the pool was bad enough, but when it was John at the head of it? It was almost unthinkable to her.
"I still can't believe John would do this to you Red! I mean, that's your job, right? It needs to stay your job." He was determined, as he twined his way through the smaller caverns, keeping his eyes peeled for any sign of John or the Fragglettes.
"...yeah..." Red mumbled, keeping up pace with him.
Gobo stopped, hearing the flat tone of Red's voice. He turned and looked at her, frowning softly.
"He took your job. Not only your job, but...he's hurting everyone." He said softly to her; lifting her chin upwards.
"How could he have hurt everyone, Gobo. I mean, it's just the pool. Everyone will get tired of playing, and splashing around; then they'll leave. And it'll all go back to normal."
"He's gone too far this time, Red! Remember when he made you and Mokey do those things? And he almost caused us to drive the doozers away?" Gobo paused for a moment, and wrapped his arms around Red, giving her a comforting hug.
"He shouldn't be allowed to...to flaunt his power to how he likes! He did that not for everyone else's benefits, but for his own!"
Red leaned into Gobo's strong arms, and laid her head on his shoulder. She started to cry just then. It was very rare, and very insulting for a Fraggle's job to be taken away like that.
"It'll be okay, Red." Gobo rubbed her back gently, and he slipped out of her grasp, and the two of them went on forward to find John.
"So, John. How is everything going now?" Darla asked, leaning against the rock face; smiling.
"It's much cooler now. A nice breeze is coming around." John said, his eyes still closed tight, relaxing once more on the large rock.
"You know what's still going on though?" Carla said, with a sour sneer. "The water is still going down!"
Carla pointed downwards, as the Fraggles were filing out of the pool, drying themselves off, and the water was only a couple of inches deep now, and was still being drained.
"The Gorgs are pulling their weekly bathwater. That's what's going on." John said, irritablely.
Darla looked down, and saw the Fraggles were fussing among themselves, and were beginning to meander back to their normal daily plans. The pool was completely empty now, and was quickly turning bone dry in the heat.
"John?? Something is really wrong. Normally...the Gorgs only pull half the pool, right?" Darla said, with a slight tremor to her voice.
Convincing John sat up just then. When Darla got worried, it was really time to maybe take an interest in what was being said. He too looked over the edge, and his face took the color of a pale rag fraggle just then.
As John was looking over the edge, a small rock hit the wall, right above his head. Turning to see who it was, he almost went white.
"Convincing John Fraggle!" Gobo was standing in the doorway, with Red beside him. He looked all the part of a hero for his woman done wrong, but he was more intrested in knowing why that had happened below.
"You caused all this! What got into your head? Red had a job to do, and it was her job! You don't even know why she chose this day to clean the pool out, do you??" He was steaming mad, but as he walked closer to John and the Fragglettes; he made himself calm down.
It was not right to hold anger towards him, the poor fool didn't even realize what he had done, more then likely.
"...I...no I don't know why she happened to pick this day of the week to do her job!" John shot back, attempting to glare Gobo down.
Gobo came up close to John, and stared him in the face. Then he turned away; and grasped Red's hand, nodding to her. She nodded back, and walked closer to John; coming up beside Gobo.
"M-Mr. John? I chose that day, because Mokey had told me that that was when the Gorgs normally took their baths. I clean the pool, the pool drains about h-halfway, then the pipebangers would come, and it would fill again. And the pool would be clean enough for it to refill. Just because it's hot, dosn't mean every fraggle in Fraggle Rock should go and swim in the pool!!" She finished talking, and looked straight at John for his response.
"And...have the Gorgs ever drawn too much water?" He asked, turning to look downwards to the now dry lake bed.
"Not too often. That's because the water is cold when they draw it. The silly creatures water is cold, our water is cold, their water is cold. Mokey and Gobo have helped me piece together how the waterways work. It's all connected, Mr. John."
Gobo frowned at John, who closed his eyes for a moment. He knew he was in hot water, so to speak.
"I-I didn't realize that. I'm sorry." He looked down, hoping they would just leave. He really didn't mean for all of that to happen, but it had already happened, and nothing could have changed.
"You need to know what you're dealing with before you go convincing someone, John. I'm going to go up to the room, to see what's going on. See why we haven't gotten any water from that silly creature yet."
Gobo then left with Red in tow, hoping to find better news outside.
