Muppets is what Muppets Does
The Muppets have become a spoof of themselves, truly a spoof. The 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's were completely different in terms of entertainment and television. The 90's with grunge bands and the rise of Goth culture television began to pull away from family values, and began to highlight the value of self. Entertainment became about preserving self, knocking down the little guy, and building up big business. The almighty dollar sign runs he show and the Muppets followed right along. Family values, what are those? We do not have time to sit down as a family and eat a meal together, we are soccer moms, and little league coaches. We have trips to the mega mall to fill our time, and no one wants to spend a Sunday night at home with there parents playing board games. There are giant video screen bowling alleys, and I Max theaters, and every thing we read, watch hear and see tells us to think about ourselves, to stand up for us, to rage against the machine, to ignore our old and out of touch parents, and to pleasure ourselves. We have video games and mega meals, Porn on the internet, and it is ok because this is the information age. We giant technology to fast, and then abused the power of it, the responsibility of it. And my friends the Muppets are no acceptation, a simple song and a bit of felt might make you feel better, but that is not enough to sell a product or build 120 minute film around. No one wants to feel better because it is all about depression, and being dark and moody, it is about over prescribing Prozac, and over using ADD, and getting high. Mom and Dad leave there kids alone untill one day they read about them in the paper or see there face on TV. We have babies having babies, and people straping bombs to there chest. The world is uniquely different, and the muppets will ahev to do what they have to do to survive.
Muppets Wizard of Oz could have been one awesome film, with some really great effects, characters, and one heck of a story to back it all up. In stead what we get is a product of our culture and of our age. And who better to know exactly what kids and adults alike want across the unites states and the world, but Disney.
