Do Folks Do This To You..?

Hey, I'm all for people making a statement, but some of these guys go for "shock for Shock's sake" and then pawn it off as having "Artistic vision." it's not so much a free speach thing for me, but there are millions of talented artists that can't even wedge themselves into a local museum, who have spent years of training, and they lose to moronic posers.

Well I think it's both. It's true that "questionable" art sometimes get all the attention over "quality" pieces simply because it's shocking.

I bring up free speech also though, because sometimes it seems like all free speech is protecting these days is nonesense. It could be because we in America don't have as much of a serious problem with free speech as other countries (and we don't), but it's still frustrating.

I use to feel that way when I buy something like a Looney Tunes magazine from a grocery store or rent a kid's video and wonder what the clerks think of me.

Now I'm thankful the internet has come. For now I can order the stuff online without having anyone in a big store judge me.

Not to bring up a dead thread but...

I feel the same way sometimes. This doesn't most of the time directly go alongside liking the Muppets, but that one thing often makes people think of me as some freak. This one guy that I'm in a play with at school seems to think I'm just someone who goes home and does nothing but watch Muppets and used that as a build-up to continually bother me (he's obsessed with telling me that I have a "nice ***"). I also got in a big fight with my friend a few months ago because he insisted that TMS and SS were the same exact thing ("a puppet is a puppet") and he blabbed about it to some other guy whom I'm in the play with and he constantly walks up to me and says "So, the Muppets and Sesame Street are the same exact thing?" to push my buttons and everytime I wear a shirt with a Muppet on it, he always has to pipe in, "he's from Sesame Street, right?" People can be so judgemental...

Some people think it's weird that I watch SpongeBob, Aqua Teen (loved the movie, btw) and even The Simpsons and Family Guy. It's like, "why are you watching cartoons? Grow up!"

And I agree, Dr. Tooth: like Survivor is intellectually stimulating.

Dude, same with me! I mean, I was in middle school, and people told me I ought to stop watching cartoons. MIDDLE SCHOOL! Everybody's still a kid, basically, what are you SUPPOSED to watch, porn?

One guy even told me, and I quote "You've GOT to stop watching cartoons... I'm just trying to help you grow up." That guy should talk, he said he was an aspiring animator! Well, what do you think HE watches?

Besides The Simpsons and Family Guy are adult cartoons anyway, so what's the deal?

I used to really get grief for liking Star Trek and the Beatles. Kids really can be so cruel. If they've never heard of something, it must be bad. Plus our society doesn't altogether tolerate those who want to live their own way. I do think people like that are inwardly jealous because they don't have the nerve to break away from the mainstream mold. They don't want to admit they're wrong for being "sheep."

But as I got older I meant more people and saw that my interests weren't so strange after all. You really can't fall into the trap of thinking middle school or High School represents the whole world. Once it's done, it's done forever.

Now that being said, the most important thing is learning to get along with people, even if you disagree. TV shows aren't as important as human beings, even the difficult ones.

You know, considering how main stream Star Trek and Beatles are, I AM surprised you'd get slack from that. I love the Beatles myself (though I prefer their more artistic later works than their earlier music). Only reason you'd get slack from Star Trek is from Jocks or something that usually have it in for sci-fi lovers. Oddly enough, I am not huge on Sci Fi other than Star Wars... and if Futurama, Jetsons, and ALF count.

Only real slack I got was for loving Kinnikuman/Ultimate Muscle and buying the comic. And even then it was one time. Persoanlly, I tend to run paralel with the crowd, but do my own thing. While Anime became really mainstream, I'm always watching obscure things that would never come to the US, or even still aren't too popular.

Porn and cartoons? Well, there is something called "Hentai"... but I don't wanna go into that. And if he's an animator that whines about cartoons, maybe he's some sort of elitist. Heck, I've heard of a lot of people over 20 liking Kim Possible. There's something for everybody in animation. Coming from someone who loves approximately 80-90% of it (Can't stand 1970's Hanna Barbera outside of Hong Kong Phooey for one), that's an important statement.

Well actually Star Trek has often been considered outside the mainstream. Fans have always been called nerds, even in the '60s. That's why they changed the fan name from Trekkie to Trekker, because the latter sounded cooler. I personally still prefer Trekkie, I don't care about looking "cool", lol.

But yeah there's no excuse for disrespecting the Beatles. I actually prefer some of their earlier work. In a way it was more heartfelt. But that's just me.
