Backstage pictures from Elmo in Grouchland

Thanks for posting that Pino! I didn't know Mary Robinette Kowal had worked with Henson. Cool stuff! :)

    Original Characters

That's your Uncle? I know his work, it's great. I've never actually got to try one his Vent dummies but they have a great, distinctive look to them.

My first two puppets-please tell me what you think

I haven't actually looked at the OWS pattern itself in years, but I'd suggest it's a combination of both. There's a trick to getting the mouth nice like the Muppet ones. I discovered the trick accidently once when I took apart a Fisher Price Ernie. I'll post a thing about it soon when I have...

An introduction and a question about The Foam Book.

Hi Marc! I'd say that the Foam Book is a must if you're serious about building foam puppets. Personally, I wouldn't spring for the video if you're not that in to the "Muppet style" but if you can afford it, go for it too. Incidently, if you're in Chicago you should contact the Chicagoland...

Has anyone else ever wondered this?

Amen to Puppetguy's point about live touring being much more profitable (and stable!) than TV in the long run. I've always found the lower-profile opportunities often pay better overall and are much less stress and hassle than TV or film/video.

    Question About Copying Tapes

Actually, I was saying that illegaly downloading won't bankrupt Madonna (thought that's a pretty hilarious image you conjured up there) but it could mean that some poor schlep working in the warehouse making $8.50 hour could lose their job. When money is tight the first thing a record label does...

    Question About Copying Tapes

If you're talking about using a camera to copy a video (and I don't understand why someone would actually do this, but I digress...) it is illegal UNLESS you live in the United States and you have purchased a copy of whatever you are taping (like a DVD or VHS tape) or if it is a show off TV. In...

    Question About Copying Tapes

In a word, yes. In two, highly illegal.

    Question About Copying Tapes

My point was that there are serious limits on what you can and can't do with a copyrighted work, but in retrospect yes, a high school english class was probably not the best example (under US law - other countries are different remember). However - as with most things related to copyright law -...

    Show Me Your Best!

Well, they're not exactly my "best" (one or two I only designed, but did not build) but I have some work from a few years ago online here.

My first two puppets-please tell me what you think

That's a nice puppet for a first attempt, though it does look they were derived from a OWS pattern. I haven't been impressed with the OWS pattern and never used it myself. I know many others on the board didn't like it either. It's really just intended to help out churches that want to make...

Expert puppet designer and builder availible

I completely agree with Dpuppets. I think this nonsense about hording information and "secrets" is stupid. In the end, it's all just foam!! That said, the Muppet workshop can't really endorse anyone making their own Muppets. If they do this improperly they could undermine their copyrights...

What DVD's would you like in 2004?

I'd like to see The Jim Henson Hour on DVD. I'd also like them either issue a DVD of "The Best of Bert & Ernie" (a Sony Wonder compilation tape in the mid-90s) OR a "best of" tape featuring Frank Oz & Jim Henson's best Sesame skits.

How to audition for Sesame Street in another country

I think it varies. In Canada they mostly hired puppeteers who were veterans of "Fraggle Rock." In other countries it seems like they have hired local puppeteers with little or no experience and then had them trained. In either case I think they usually only hire locals. Because American media...

Expert puppet designer and builder availible

Sometimes people (not anyone in particular...I'm speaking generally here) will make their first post or two here and want to know everything there is to know about puppet building. I think what these people don't realize or appreciate sometimes is that a lot of professionals - the Muppet...

    A little Mirrormask news

I just thought I would share this little snippet of info on the progress of "Mirrormask" that I read in Neil Gaiman's blog: Let's see -- Mirrormask wise, as far as I can tell everything is going fine. Whenever I talk to Dave McKean and actually ask him how it's going he makes that despairing...

    Puppeteers wanted for Off-Off-Broadway

Another interesting puppetry opportunity, this time in NYC: The Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre is looking for traditional vent puppets and puppeteers. We would like to have a chorus of vent dummies in our upcoming production, "The Life and Times of Lee Harvey Oswald." We are...
