Using today's technology you can shoot shows on video or film (if you have the right equipment and crew) and it's hard for the casual observer to tell the difference when it's done right. The 70s shows you mention are a pretty dated comparison.
I think film still looks better than tape or HD...
There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer to this question. What is used would depend on the circumstances, what the puppeteers or production prefers and what's needed for a particular shot. I think that although a puppeteering dolly on a track is sometimes used, the typical solution involves some...
Thanks for sharing that link Pauly; someone told me about this last week but I couldn't find a version of the video that would play through a Canadian IP address. Cool stuff!
Just FYI here in Toronto, just take the Spadina Streetcar to Queen West and walk along Queen to Bathurst and stop in all the fabric shops; you'll find most of what you need. Takes about an hour or so to cruise the strip. I highly recommend Leo's Textiles and MacFab (just west of Bathurst)...
The Henson Performance Control System (let's call it the HPCS) is the Creature Shop's high-end system that was originally developed for animatronics and is now used for CG as well. I've heard that they are starting to use it in video games, but I am not sure which ones.

There's a great sketch of animal's eyebrow mech that Terry posted on the board years ago somewhere...try searching the puppetry forum under eye blink or eye wink. This subject has been covered here a lot over the years and there is, as always, lots of good stuff to be found in the archives.
This is for those of you on the board who are down under...there's a film and television puppety workshop in Sydney beginning next month. I've posted a few more details and links to more information in my blog - http://puppetvision.blogspot.com/2005/05/tv-puppetry-workshop-down-under.html
I've never seen the puppet so I have no idea how it was actually built, but as Ravagefrackle says it's all in the pattern. It doesn't require any special material. I doubt there is any weight in the end of the nose, if there was it probably wouldn't be able to jiggle.
Blink's absolutely right, there is zero correlation between your ability and the price your work goes for on ebay.
I think the starting bid isn't bad (some people start at over $50 and they never sell) but I know that some builders have success because they start their bids really, really low...
