I think prototyping and building mock-ups is something that a lot of builders just starting out don't do, I know it was five or six years before I started doing that. It's an extremely valuable thing to do. I'm in the process of making a small bear and I've gone through five or six heads this...
I'd like to second the defense of Victor and Drew. I don't think OverUnderAround meant any disrespect, but they are both very talented guys. It's a stellar lineup of puppetry talent.
Hey all,
So there is a special event at the upcoming U.S. Comedy Festival called "Jim Henson's Puppet Improv" in Aspen. It's an adult only live performance and features some of the best Muppet performers. Presumably no Muppets though, since it's a Henson Co. event and Disney doesn't appear to...
For fun, I did a quick trademark search and the RCMP hasn't registered "Mountie" as a trademark (that doesn't mean it isn't a trademark, just that they haven't bothered to register it) but I think you're right, it is a common word. The problem is the uniform and Mountie image, which the RCMP...
What I personally do is make the mouthplate from leather in two parts (one top, one bottom) then glue them to a single piece of black felt cut to the same size as the entire mouth plate. Leather glues to foam just fine (using contact cement) but if it's finished (smooth) on one side you have to...
I agree that there's no rules, but each type of material does have different properties.
There's no contradiction in encouraging experimentation and still maintaining an opinion on which materials might work best for one thing or another. I think that the important thing to remember in these...
Monterrey is probably 6-8 hours from the Texas border. I've only ever flown down from Texas so I don't know how long it takes to drive exactly. You can catch a bus there from most major cities in Texas for less than $50 US if you take one of the Mexican bus lines. Otherwise it's about a one hour...
I think colour is better if you can get them, but B&W works fine too if that's what you have to work with. I don't recommend using LCD screens (like the kind used in DVD players) if you're moving around a lot simply because it's difficult to see the screen properly at different angles.
Disney no longer holds the licensing rights to the RCMP's trademarks, including the Mountie likeness. One of the characters I have used for years - Marshall Mountie - traditionally wears a Mountie-like uniform. What I've done to avoid problems is make sure the uniform is not an exact copy of the...
Just a little more info re: York's puppetry course, they actually do cover construction techniques, but it's mostly a performance-oriented course and I believe it's only open to people who are already studying at York (you can't just take it part-time or on it's own). The course covers a whole...
Wal-Mart sells little TV sets (black and white) for about $30 with A/V inputs that can be used as a portable monitor. They run on D cell batteries, so invest in a charger and two or three sets of rechargable batteries for it.
OK, so I didn't visit the actual set of Mexico's version of Sesame Street, Plaza Sesamo (although I'm trying to work on that!) but I did check out the Parque Plaza Sesamo theme park in Monterrey over the weekend.
I took lots of pics and posted my favourites on Flickr -...
