Wood certainly works for puppets and it's been used for centuries. But the weight that a couple of wooden balls adds - in my experience - is pretty significant. I don't personally like using styrofoam, but I think if you're having trouble locating plastics spheres for whatever reason styrofoam...
Thought this might be of interest to anyone in or around Orlando:
Wanted: Puppeteer/Puppet Instructor for the City of Orlando Puppetroupe, operated through the City of Orlando Recreation Division. Duties would include, but not exclusive to: teaching puppetry and puppet-making to children ages...
I think the idea of a FAQ is a great one, BUT it should be static and not a message board thread. Kevin (Fozzie) tried starting a thread for this last year, but it's not very useful now because the discussion is long and off-topic. Ditto for the "How to get a job with the Muppets thread."
I'm...
The last contact info I had for Mercury Plastics was:
Mercury Plastics
995 Utica Avenue
Brookly, NY 11203
(718) 498-1557
They don't have a web site as far as I know. It's a little confusing because there are a few companies named Mercury Plastics, but they all have no connection to one and...
I use almost the same method as Steve. I don't cut a single piece of foam in half though, I just use two pieces of 1/2 inch foam (or whatever size is appropriate.
Here are some photos that illustrate how the wires should be placed...
The flocking wand uses static electricity I believe. I've been told that the old way of doing flocking was to blow the flock on to whatever you were flocking, but that's considered to be unsafe because you end up inhaling the flock.
This has been explained in a lot of the Muppet books (anyone know web resources?) but basically the way it works is that Carroll or Matt Vogel operate Big Bird's head with one hand while their other arm performs one of Big Bird's arms. The arm (Big Bird's) that isn't animated is connected to the...
Just to address this issue (since I tend to be one of the people who do that) I don't think anyone who suggests using the search function is trying to be mean or anything like that. It's just that inevitably in any forum like this one new users end up asking the same questions over and over...
Do you mean Sculpt or Coat?
If so, the manufacturer has some pages with ideas for using it in puppet construction - http://www.sculpturalarts.com/puppetpage1.htm
Just to clarify, Disney no longer controls the merchandising rights to the RCMP image (but they did for about five years). They never "owned" the image, they just acted as a licensing agent for the RCMP.
I think there's a lot of interesting, untapped potential in using felt for puppets but if this is your first time building a puppet you might want to consider using fleece instead. You may find it gives you better results. Whatever you decide to use, be sure to post and share pics when you're done!
I would try either casting the beak in latex or making it in foam and then applying several coats of latex to the beak. If you do enough coats and they are thin enough you will get a nice, smooth finish.
Bonus points if you cast the beak in latex and flock it, but you need a flocking wand to do...
It's by Drew Alliston and Donald Devet of Grey Seal Puppets. Their web site is www.greysealpuppets.com. You can probably buy a copy directly from them.
It was really controversial in Canada when it happened. Basically the RCMP had no licensing experience, they're busy doing other things like solving crimes and riding around on horses in fancy uniforms :p so they gave Disney the license, learned from them and then didn't renew the deal when it...
