I'm just throwing this out there, but what about keeping the character mute? That might be totally impractical for what you want to do, but sometimes it's really effective to do that because it allows the audience to project a character on to the puppet. It's also a neat puppeteering challenge...
I'm not sure. I met the designer who did the show I am thinking of when I was doing black light in Toronto around `97 or `98. He was up there visiting relatives and heard about the show I was in and decided to check it out.

Everybody here can do that and I hope they do. There's so much talent here and this is such a great way to get their work seen by a really wide audience.

That's a good point. I think with Sesame Street they're not going for 100% realistic movement and it's a stylistic choice. It really is important to experiment a lot and try different approaches.
You could join Puppeteers of America and go to different puppet shows and talk with the puppeteers afterwards. When he's older going to a puppet festival would be a great idea.
