At the Museum of Moving Image screening, either Caroll or Craig Shemin said that was done to give the movie a more consistent look. It bugged me too, but I can't say I disagree with their choice.

I wanna say it's the brownish-red creature behind Chip (who we have on the Wiki as "Cynthia Rose" because of the Prince song). "Satay" might be the official puppet's name.
"Such and such obscure character wasn't in it" is not and never will be a valid negative point. Chip's cameo is the show's way of saying "yes, we know there's a bunch of characters that exist. They'll get their turns at some point."

Which brings me to something I found there - along with a new theme arrangement, they did film a new opening sequence. So, yay!
Well, of course we'll see it in the fall; we just don't know when. From stuff I've seen on Instagram, there's a Halloween episode (or special, who knows), so the season should be starting in October at the latest.
I'm willing to let this slide since the show's had about a year from shoot until air to work on them. And so, they probably need a little more time to edit these shows/make the CGI and such.
So, checking some PBS Listings from KET, it doesn't appear that the season will be premiering in September. So, maybe October or November? Or maybe I'm wrong, who knows!
You know what I'd love to see? We catch a glimpse of them rehearsing "Mahna Mahna," then we see what the Snowths/Mahana Mahna actually do outside of the bit.
