If this is the surprise song I remember, it featured much of the cast demonstrating "surprise" with a lot of slapstick humor.
Some highlights:
Bob: Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water...
Cast: SURPRIIIIIIISE!!! as Bob gets a bucket of water dumped on him.
Gordon's...
Yes, they were in the very first episode trying to hang a picture on a wall.
In November 1970, an article in Time magazine described Buddy and Jim as
"a walking Polish joke".
First was Buddy and Jim, then in Season 2 came Larry and Phyllis, then in Season 3 came Wally and Ralph.
There was also a clip of Carol reciting the alphabet. She'd say a few letters
normally "A,B,C", then she'd start crying "D,E,F,(Sniff!)G" , then get angry
"H,I,J,K,L,M", hysterical "N!! O!!!! P!!!!", laughing "R,S (Hahahaha), T(HEEHEEHEEHEEHEE!!!!), then return to normal "U,V,W,X,Y,Z".
She...
Holy cow, sometimes you people are really good at digging stuff up that I almost totally forgot about!
I remember the Busby Twins (can't remember if they had actual names).
If memory serves me well, Jim Henson was the shopkeeper, and Frank Oz and Jerry Nelson were the twins. The one skit I...
I remember the Alphabet Chats during the brief time they were around. Poor Lord Chatterly. All he wanted was to have a nice calm chat with the viewers about the merits of various letters, and all **** would break loose, reducing the guy to tears.
I can't remember which letter was being...
Happy B'day
Yes, it was 36 years ago today, when Mom turned on Sesame Street for the very first time, and I was there!
It was something having a black-and-white set back then. Couldn't tell if Oscar was orange or green or brown or blue. A year later, when we finally got color... WOW...
Peanut Butter
I remember the peanut butter one also. We see a farmer pulling a few out of the ground, while there's harpsichord music in the background. A kid's voiceover does mention "The raw peanuts are horrible, my grandpa bought some". Then they go to the factory see the peanuts being...
Sing, why don'tcha
I was around, and there were a number of bits where Sing popped up.
The version on the Sesame Street 2 album was the first time it appeared on record. The Carpenters' version came out in March 1973 and went top 5 (I still have the 45 I got for my 5th birthday).
I can't...
I really wish when Noggin was first introduced, everybody had access to it.
But it all depended on what part of the country you lived in, and how much you'd be willing to shell out. Imagine that way back in 1999. If you want to see some old Unpaved episodes, you'd either have to know somebody...
B is for Bubble
One of the great things about Sesame Street, especially in the old days, was how they could make something out of practically nothing.
Take some clips of kids blowing bubbles, have some kids singing a round to the tune of Three Blind Mice, and you got an instant classic! And...
girl chewing gum
Hey Ziffel. The film you're mentioning was about how gum is made. They show chicle ( a gum base), syrup, and sugar getting mixed together, pressed in a big mold, rolled out into sheets, cut into strips, then wrapped up.
There was some musical accompaniment that sounds like a...
I hope you get this in time. Sesame Street is taped at the Kaufman Astoria Studios, which is located in Queens, not Manhattan. The address is 34-12
36th Street, Astoria, (Queens) NY 11106. Their phone # is (718)-392-5600.
I believe there is a lobby open to the general public, but not to the...
How many is 5?
5 fingers, 5 ice cream sodas, 5 whatever they are (including Brown Grover, or green, depending on how the tint control was set on your tv),
5 frogs, and 5 dimes. Plus the baker falling down the stairs with 5 fancy fruitcakes(fine with me, because how many fruitcake fans are...
That's Brian Henson we see with the nine quarters. We also saw him with three peas, five dimes, and seven nickels. And to keep things in the family, that's Jim's daughter Lisa whining about the nine noodles.
I wish they could revise the Sesame Street Unpaved book because they did leave a lot out. Miguel (Jaime Sanchez) doesn't get mentioned at all, and Molly, Tom, and Rafael get passed over as well. Also, Maria made her debut in 1971, not 1974 (I know, I was around to remember!). Although the book...
My top 5 in no particular order:
1. Roosevelt Franklin. Booksmart and streetsmart.
2. Little Jerry (of...and the Monotones). Hippie muppets singing about being mad. Very cool for its day.
3. Ernie- especially from Season One. Fun-loving, not afraid to cry.
4. Zizzy Zoomers- get your copy...
Cookie Monster Ad
The only time I've seen it at the Museum was way back in 1996, and I think somebody loaned it as part of a temporary exhibit. However, the vintage Henson commercials are part of their permanent collection. Still worth the trip if you ever make it out here.
cookie monster commercials
That would really be something if they put out some Muppet commercials on DVD.
The closest we have to that now- at the Museum of Television and Radio in New York they have in their archives several volumes of Henson/Muppet commercials dating back to the '50's. None...
Way back when Richard Hunt was still alive, and he performed Slimey, he never spoke, although one time he did roar like a lion. Don't ask me on the circumstances surrounding that, but that's what happened.
I think it's great to add a little more depth to his character by letting him speak...
