I remember that skit quite well, with Sherlock using his brilliant powers of deduction, and the way the skit ended. First the boy (or was it the girl?) comes out and invites the girl (or was it the boy?) to see his birthday presents, leaving Sherlock alone. First the camera shows a tight...
I always loved the two anything muppets dressed like aliens- the pink one with purple hair and a purple collar done by Jim, the green one with blue hair performed by Frank, who take turns reciting the alphabet, until they get to V and recite them together. In the background, Joe Raposo is...
RIP Jim
I was twenty-two, and I was a week away from graduating college. I was coming home from work late at night and heard the news on the car radio.
I was shattered. Unlike a lot of you who weren't born yet, I had a lifetime of Sesame Street, Muppet Show, and Fraggle Rock under my belt. One...
Also "Disco Cookie"
where the audience cheers Cookie Monster on as he eats his cookies,
then his costume, then all the stage equipment! (Hope he didn't burn his mouth on the hot lights!!)
All together now!
Down below the street can you dig the steady beat it's the subway.
SUBWAY!!
Moving right along hear the rhythm loud and strong it's the subway.
SUBWAY!!
Since there isn't any room in this town
We put all our trains down under the ground
Buy a token now for a ride...
Hoots was also kind of a mentor for Savion Glover when he was new to the cast. Savion wanted to show his stuff and dance at Birdland, but had to wash dishes and mop the floor. Hoots kept promising that if you keep practicing, and pay your dues, some day you will get your chance to shine.
Nice...
It always used to break my heart when the human cast would be so close to seeing Snuffy, then through some stroke of bad luck, would just miss him, frustrating Big Bird to no end.
The closest I recall Snuffy making human contact (prior to his being revealed in 1985) with anyone was back in...
Maybe his profit margin wouldn't be as high for selling the food than for selling the scale. Although buying a scale or two pounds of anything these days for a nickel would be a sweet deal indeed. I'd even take him up on it.
What other foods did Ernie ask Lefty if he had? I haven't seen this...
Vic, this is fantastic news! The Museum does have some great special events once in a while. Back in January 2004 I was lucky enough to meet Christopher Cerf and some of the puppeteers from Between the Lions, so I can only imagine who might show up this time! :)
my memory's a little dim, the muppet in question looked like he had blue fur, two little horns and a few teeth sticking out. Not as scary as Beautiful Day, but not as cute as Grover.
He also did a similar skit subtracting whistles. There were five of them lined up on Mr. Hooper's counter, and...
I was a week away from graduating from Montclair State University, and Jim's death seemed to shut the door forever on my childhood- I felt that childlike innocence would be gone forever, and now I was forced to grow up and become part of the big bad adult world. The rest of 1990 was a bummer for...
Definitely some cool shots in there- I recognize quite a few from all the records I got.
The one cast shot from 1989- the 20th anniversary- still makes me a little sad. You see Luis and Maria together as a couple, and poor David
waaaaaaaaaaaaaay on the other side, next to Bob's Uncle Wally...
My two cents
I have to agree. As this is an open forum, everyone is entitled to their opinions, and have the right to voice them. However one has to choose their words carefully or you might end up alienating a lot of people.
I agree that the whole myth of Ernie and Bert being gay has been...
Another gem from 1969 shows Ernie with a scrape on his finger, and he tells Bert of his wild story of everything that happened at the zoo.
It ends with Bert getting increasingly hysterical as Ernie telling him about how
elephants and hippos were running around lose, a bus crashes, and a flying...
Not to say Ernie was clairvoyant (that means he's a mindreader), but out of the 8 million or so kids watching Sesame Street back then, there MIGHT have been a handful at any given time that were probably feeling down about themselves, and this was a magical way to help boost kids' self-esteem...
That song was El Condor Pasa, which can be found on Simon and Garfunkel's 1970 album Bridge Over Troubled Water.
Maybe I'm having a memory lapse, but I could've sworn on his 1977 appearance on Street, he did a version of Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard. I may be right, I may be wrong. But...
dated images
If you look really close at the shot for the letter Y, it shows a New York license plate with tabs that expire 2-70 (the time my wife was born!) :)
Time has certainly been kind to most of them. I met Susan (Loretta Long) back in 1998, and except for gaining a few pounds and changing her hairstyle,
looks almost EXACTLY as she did in 1969.
Growing up, it was easy to see most of the cast members as adults in their 30's. The one major...
