If you're definitely going to be at San Diego Comic-Con in July and want to participate in a panel about puppetry AND cartooning (not just one or the other), e-mail me at mayberry@melonpool.com. I need your name, address, e-mail and phone info for the form in case they have to contact you.
DO...
I have no idea what you're talking about here. Structured improv comedy really helps. There are rules and techniques. Also, they have exercises that really free you up once you're able to master the rules.
I'm in my fourth set of classes with them and have yet to cluck like a chicken. ;)
Sorry for resurrecting an extremely old post, but I need to outfit myself with a good wireless mic set-up for puppet videos fast. I'd need a set up for 2-3 mics at a time (1 for each puppeteer and one for the interviewee). Also, set ups with battery packs would be ideal since convention floors...
I personally use a big piece of black paper and a toothbrush dipped in thinned-down Pro-White (the high-end version of White-out). I basically run my thumb over the bristles of the toothbrush, randomly spattering paint onto the black board.

I meant to measure mine yesterday when I had them down off the shelf, but mine are all about 2 feet tall (without legs). Mine are a little different in that I'm trying to represent cartoon characters that I made years ago, so the heads tend to be a lot larger than the bodies. Since there's only...
I'm working on the exact same mechanism in the new Sam puppet.
My plan is to put a wire frame inside the top two inches of the ears, poking through the foam head at a 90-degree angle. They'd be hand-sewn in place , but the weight of the ear material would cause them to lie more or less flat...
I typically can cover a body with two (sometimes one) piece of fabric, with a lot of darts. If you can hide them at the sides or the back, it's your best bet.
Look at how a football us put together. Kermit's body would be four () shapes made from foam, with about 3 1/2 inches at the top and 4 1/2 inches at the bottom of each piece. I'd say they'd be about 9 inches tall, but you may have to adjust them.
Then, upolster the finished shape by pinning...
Yeah -- I'm in. Any time after Easter weekend. Why don't you do this bezalel -- make the grand prize $20. That way, people could essentially get the pattern for free if they win the contest. And I'd think a lot of people might buy it just to participate. Just an idea.
So, shall we throw frogs...
Kermit's head is the size of Jim Henson's hand. The wrist hits right around the collar. His elbow hits right around the base of the body (the asparagus-sy parts).
Jim Henson was over six feet tall. If we could get an exact height, you could measure the arm of someone realively the same height...
If you're looking for hair for Calvin, try Lincoln Fabrics on Lincoln Blvd in Venice. That's where I got the fur I used for Mayberry's hair. It's about 3-inch long fake fur and comes in a variety of colors (like bright yellow). I made them into cones and hand stitched each one on as tufts of...
We should all try to build a puppet from this pattern in a day... sort of a 24-hour puppet exercise. It'd be interesting to see all the variations from essentially the same starting point.
