I forget what number it is specifically, but I believe gender swapping/flipping characters is a "rule" of the internet, similar to Rule 34, if you know what I mean.
But this way, everybody should be happy: those who want them to be gay are free to think so, and those who don't want to be are free to think so as well; this is the answer SW should have given years ago.
Granted, it's only been recent years they would have been able to give such an answer - if...

I'm really curious as to how they made Bert's fingers move. Considering I recently learned from Adam Kreutinger that a lot of puppets have snap-on arms, I'm guessing they popped off Bert's regular arms, and snapped on special arms that had a mech or some sort built into the fingers that allowed...

To be fair though, this is about the most blunt, lucid, and well-presented answer to the problem: if people want to think they're gay, fine; if people don't want...
Prairie aside, 2-Headed Monster still seems to be used as a background character more than anything, but Mr. Johnson's ever-increasing presence on the show still seems a tad unusual to me, TBH.
At this point, I'd kind of be surprised if they continue with Telly after if and when Marty decides to retire, simply because his role on the show has diminished so much in recent years - heck, even Joey remarked about his disappointment that Telly hadn't really been catching on with kids before...
Oh yeah, heck, I can still remember at times, Season 34 in particular felt like "The Telly, Baby Bear, and Zoe Show" since there were a number of episodes focusing on that trio.
Looks like after all these years, Sesame Place is finally getting a long-overdue, and much-needed make over for Season 50:
