Hi gang,
On February 20 I e-mailed John Spelich, Vice President-Corporate Communications of Disney, about the Muppet buyout and I got a response today. Here it is:
Thanks for your note.
Sorry it took some time to get back, but we wanted to make sure we had as complete an answer as...
Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree. And this line:
>>On the other, I am offended by the crass commercialism, excessive violence and thinly veiled racism and sexism that populates so many Disney creations. I don’t respect Disney, but I admit they’re the best at what they do.<<
What that has to...
Not.
I mean c'mon, even I wouldn't do that, as a businessman anyway. Besides they already have a "consulting arrangement" and I'm sure these kind of issues came up in the negotiations. I don't think the Henson family, who are businesspeople, would sell two of their company's biggest...
Got on the 'net Tuesday night, checking my e-mail. I was scrolling through the LaughingPlace.com newsletter, then saw the headline "Disney to buy Muppets, relaunch on TV." Simple as that, and I was shocked beyond belief. Even more shocked when I understood Disney didn't buy the "Muppets" as in...
Dang, I actually found out what the phone number was before it appeared on the screen and I should have stayed on the line.
I wanted to ask him why he bought the Muppets and not the Henson Co. outright and would the Henson company/family have an active role in the Muppets' future.
Oh well.
>>Jim Henson could turn his mother’s old coat into an internationally celebrated phenomenon who has given commencement speeches and performed for royalty.<<
Best line.
Remember, there are DISNEY fan sites too.
And Phil, great article with great points. I'm not so much concerned about seeing Muppet/Fraggle/Sesame crossovers. When's the last time that's happened, 1990? And I don't think a Fraggle's been used since '93.
But yes, I wish the Muppets AND...
I can understand the concern, but do remember there are DISNEY fan sites too.
Getting back to the deal, it also includes "the Muppet film and television library." Now obviously TMS, MT, TMM, GMC, and others would be involved in that category. But how about shows like JHH, or "Tale of the...
OK, I've had some time to think. So Henson has sold THE Muppets, characters that look like the Muppets (Muppet Babies), and BITBBH. And they've dissected the library and sold the "Muppet" parts of it to Disney?
I'll be effing darned. Man, I would love for the whole Henson character family and...
Holy Mother of God. What in the heck? What?
Sorry, but I didn't see this coming. Don't know if I'm ecstatic or not, I"ve been waiting for this day for 8 years, but I didn't expect it like this.
Man, I'll absorb it and talk later. Wow.
Good grief. They're the world's second-largest media company and they have to go through this.
I like the name The Walt Disney Company, but if Comcast succeeds they better darn well rename themselves Comcast Disney.
