Sam and Friends Book Read our review of the long-awaited book, "Sam and Friends - The Story of Jim Henson's First Television Show" by Muppet Historian Craig Shemin.
For the past year and a half I've been producing a documentary about puppeteers and puppetry around the world called "PuppetVision". The film includes a segment that discusses the Muppets and Jim Henson's impact on art and culture.
As part of this I'm looking to interview some really...
Well, you would have to of course discuss that with the person who is mentoring you.
Despite what I said above, if you are being mentored by someone one-on-one and then posting a lot of what they are teaching you online I could understand how that would irk them. It's a good idea in a...
Wherefrom are you getting this vibe?
You can absolutely post "work-in-progress" photos if you want to. Lots of artists do that. As for "trade secrets" if you've been building for less than a year I doubt you're doing anything that others haven't thought of. Post whatever you feel like sharing...
Jarrod Boutcher (who posts here on the forum sometimes) has built a Big Bird before. I can't seem to find photos of it with a quick search, but it sometimes shows up in the background of photos and videos in his workshop.
Your videos are pretty good. The only suggestion I have (and it's a minor one) is that you may want to make your movements a little stronger and more definite. What I mean by that is that when you decide you're going to have your puppet change its focus, commit to it and make the movement strong...
I was at Dragon*Con, but unfortunately didn't get to meet many people from MC who were there (I hung out mostly with the puppeteers in and around the puppetry track), although I did meet Slackbot!
Here is some video of Peter Linz, Leslie Carrara Rudolph and David Stephens working the line...
Stephanie D’Abruzzo has posted about Jerry's passing on her personal blog - http://stephaniedabruzzo.blogspot.ca/2012/08/jerry.html
Also, Pam Arciero posted this message to the O'Neil Puppetry Conference Facebook Page earlier tonight:
There have been many, many comments from friends and...
Such awful, awful news. We've truly lost one of the greats. Didn't really know what to say about this tonight although I managed to write something up quickly:
Rest in Peace Jerry Nelson (1934-2012)
If anyone else is writing posts on their own sites/blogs I would love to know about it and...
I agree, any decent HD camera is good. Most cameras come with the cables to connect them to a TV set. You need a camera that can output via whatever format your monitor/TV accepts as input (for HD video that's usually HDMI these days).
Firewire is nice, but quickly becoming an outdated...
Aside from the obvious CG effects (like the wand sparks) it's 100% hand crafted puppetry. Jonny and Will specialize in doing Bunraku-style puppets...their bodies and/or the control rods for the puppets are just erased in post production when necessary.
If you watch their demo reel (there's a...
UK puppeteers Jonny & Will have produced a new three part series of shorts for Cartoon Network called "The Grumpy King". I've posted all three installments over at my blog, along with some links to more of their work - http://puppetvision.info/2012/08/jonny-wills-grumpy-king.html
I think that UNESCO has an online A/V library that streams their films, although I just Googled it and it appears to be offline temporarily. You could try contacting their Media Services department -...
Snapdragon Puppets used to have a great step-by-step overview of how to make a full body costume puppet on their website. You can find it on the Internet Achive here. It looks like some of the images are missing, but they might be available under other dates when that site was crawled if you...
