Head Forming - Reticulated Foam versa Regular construction

D'Snowth is right, if you're not getting a smooth, round shape the problem is either your pattern, your cutting, your gluing technique or some combination of the three. Using what's known as "the wedge method", if you cut 8 wedges with a ratio of 4:1 (four times longer than they are wide) and...

I think the process you're describing is called "draping".

    Texturizing fur.......questions!

Re: spray paint, unless you're extraordinarily talented with "rattle can" spray paint, I wouldn't use it to add colour to the face of a puppet. It's impossible to control the spray, which is the reason most people use an airbrush. At a shop where I used to work the shop supervisor sometimes used...

    Cookie Monster head pattern

There really are not any replica patterns available anywhere. As Ashkent said, I think the people who make replica puppets as a hobby all develop their own patterns through trial and error. The closest thing available are probably the McCall's puppet patterns that were produced in the 1980s...

    Texturizing fur.......questions!

Personally, I'm not so sure about using a spray adhesive, not that it wouldn't work, but it could get messy and wreck expensive fabric quickly. You can take regular white glue, dilute it with water and then use it to "style" fur, much like you would style hair with hair gel or mousse. Just be...

Godzilla Special FX Master Koichi Kawakita has passed away

Just posted this to my blog, Japanese special effects master Koichi Kawakita who led the team that created the creatures and special FX for many of the Godzilla movies has passed away. http://puppetvisionmovie.com/2014/12/remembering-koichi-kawakita-1942-2014/

Sherlock Gakuen - Japanese Sherlock Holmes puppet series

Has anyone else seen the Japanese series Sherlock Gakuen online? It's a new TV series on the Japanese network NHK that's a bit like Young Sherlock Holmes with Holmes and Watson as students at a London boarding school. The puppets in the series are built & performed by Japan's Studio Nova...

    Pattern Advice/Suggestions Please

That's a good question. I don't think many people think about that. I'm still somewhat new to 3D printing, but as I understand it most use some kind ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) plastic. ABS is usually not considered to be carcinogenic as far as I know, so you're probably OK if you...

    Material Identification help

Wool felt - at least the wool felt I have used - is usually difficult to roll up (it doesn't really) and will not fold flat. It's much stiffer and rougher than "regular" felt, which is synthetic. The other thing is that some of fabrics made and sold locally in Asia and Latin America are quite...

    Material Identification help

It's hard to tell from your photo, but it could be some kind of wool felt or wool blend felt. Wool felt is typically stiffer than the synthetic, man-made felt sold by most craft stores (what most people think of today when you say "felt"). Wool felt is often used to make hats and is actually a...

Arm Rod Tutorial - Step By Step

A good source for metal rods is a company called K&S Engineering, which a lot of better-known professional builders buy from. They do not sell direct from their web site, but most hobby stores in North America carry their products and they can be found online too. http://www.ksmetals.com

    Pattern Advice/Suggestions Please

I'd really recommend checking out the BJ Guyer courses from the Stan Winston school too, or as Jinx mentioned, the "Sketch to Show" DVD series from Playsoup. The first video in the series specifically deals with how to take an idea from a sketch to a pattern. It sounds like that's what you need...

Patsy Ann on Britain's Got Talent

She was built by Gluvets and is performed by Laura Bacon. She made it to the semi-finals. Originally she was performing on the show anonymously (her identity was a bit of a mystery for a couple weeks), but she's since been interviewed in the British press under her own name.

    Fuzzaboom -- A Youtube Kid's Show

I understand. That is a bit of a problem. What about using a split screen technique though? Colour correction is tricky, I suspect that you're not getting the look you want because you either not using sophisticated enough software or possibly not using the right techniques. There are a ton of...

    Fuzzaboom -- A Youtube Kid's Show

I think the video is pretty good, especially for a first time! The technical problems you're having with picture quality are not because of your camera, it's because you're not using the camera's settings and exposure controls properly. My suggestions: Ditch the blue/green screen for now. As...

    Puppets Holding Objects

For light objects, I've found sewing or pinning the object to the puppet often works best for on-camera work. If the object has to be picked up or passed from one puppeteer to another, Chris' suggestion of mounting the prop on a rod is a good approach.
