    Hard foam

I'm designing a large costume puppet that requires the use of a foam that is harder than your typical poly-foam. I've used a large mascot mask before that was made of the material I'm looking for — I think it was referred to as "TB-40 Foam". You can carve it and paint it and it's a bit like...

    Jim's Resting Place

It just kind of surprised me since I just assumed he lived mainly England and New York.

    My most recent puppet

Sweet croc! I've got the same Kermit tie you're wearing in the photo.

    Jim's Resting Place

I found an entry on findagrave.com saying Jim's ashes were scattered at his ranch in New Mexico. I've never read anything about Jim even setting foot in NM, let alone owning a ranch there. Can anyone confirm the legitimacy of this entry? I'm doubting it...

Has anyone tried making eyes this way?

Here's the follow-up from another posting. The eyes I made this way are on the newer version of the puppet: http://forum.muppetcentral.com/showthread.php?t=40601

    Finger Grips

Gasket rubber is a favorite material of most puppet builders. You can buy sheets of it at Home Depot or Lowes. I also like to use cheap foam camping mats, which you can get from a hiking supply store. It's even more flexible than gasket rubber, but the drawback is that because it's not as...

Lab Rat, where did you meet Frank for that picture?

    Then & Now

I had always wanted a lighter green fabric, but didn't have the best resources at the time I made the first puppet. I just used a scrap I had lying around from a different project. When using a fabric that dark in color I found a lot of details get lost, since the difference between the color...

    Then & Now

I just finished re-covering a puppet I made a few years ago with better color and quality fleece. His name is Trex and he's a little dinosaur I use specifically for children's puppetry. I juxtaposed some before & after shots of him for comparison. Comments/critiques are appreciated :)...

Has anyone tried making eyes this way?

So we all know the difficulties of trying to find white plastic spheres at an ideal size for puppet eyes (unless you have been blessed with a vac-u-form). It's easy to just spray-paint anything white, but then you have to protect it from chipping. I had a notion to get some clear plastic...

    HELP! building alert!

You might try using the tough vinyl/faux leather fabric used for making cheap tablecloths. It comes in a few different colors at JoAnn's. I've used it for a lobster's shell before and I liked the results.

    The Rant Puppets

Just a helpful(?) word of advice: In today's fast-paced world, if you want to get a wide audience fast I'd suggest keeping the episodes to less than three minutes max. If people aren't immediately gripped in the first five seconds, they'll stop watching. Six minutes is a lot to ask of someone...

Jim Henson Exhibit Coming to Seattle

Does anyone know if Steve and Dave are coming to talk at the Seattle exhibit like they did in Atlanta? I couldn't find anything about that on the tour itinerary.

    Monster Concept Art

Why is the lower jaw under-lapping so drastically? It seems to me that would make it difficult to tell whether or not the mouth is open. Nice rendering on the sketch.

Jim Henson Exhibit Coming to Seattle

I don't know if anyone's from Seattle, or not, but my friend told me there's a Henson exhibit coming to the EMP in Seattle from May to August next year! http://www.empsfm.org/exhibitions/index.asp?articleID=1336

    My McCain Puppet

Thanks! Yes, I wrote the parody lyrics all myself. The fleece/skin color is "ivory". McCain is so pale, I initially considered just making him pure white, but then there would be no contrast with the hair. Ivory just crosses that line, I think.

    My McCain Puppet

Thanks! I actually did make a John Kerry puppet 4 years ago! That's a good suggestion for after the election... I'm more conservative-minded myself, but never above a little self-depreciating humor.

    My McCain Puppet

Hey friends! I wanted to share a political satire puppet video I just completed with a puppet caricature I made of John McCain. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhR8XeVs_Mo&fmt=18 Any comments are appreciated! I'll try to put up some still shots of him later. Thanks, -Peter...
