You might try using the tough vinyl/faux leather fabric used for making cheap tablecloths. It comes in a few different colors at JoAnn's. I've used it for a lobster's shell before and I liked the results.

Thanks! Yes, I wrote the parody lyrics all myself. The fleece/skin color is "ivory". McCain is so pale, I initially considered just making him pure white, but then there would be no contrast with the hair. Ivory just crosses that line, I think.
