I can't be the only one to feel like a lot of Muppet groups and sites are working overtime to post fluff pieces on how great the Muppet franchise is, right? It almost feels like a collective push to get everyone to forget what's happened and move on.
Because they're actually going to read that?
Whitmire is constantly saying his peace on social media. His stance is out there for the entire world to see. What exactly is a plea to Disney to "listen to him" going to accomplish? It's done, and Disney is going to move on.
What worries me is that Whitmire was in charge of Kermit for well over a decade before Disney came along and he had SOME authority over the character by then. Matt doesn't have the experience and clout to say anything to Disney about how the character is handled.
I don't think anyone has a "right" to anything, no matter what disney may or may not have promised almost a decade ago.
We're never going to get those seasons, just like Disney Afternoon fans are never getting the shows they want. Disney has no interest in TV on DVD. That ship has sailed.
Regardless of how large their plans are, this is Kermit the Frog. He would need to recast regardless of what their plans were, considering he's the face of the entire franchise.
I think it's smart of Disney to hang on to it for the time being . If they do think now isn't the best time to release it, I totally support that. Perhaps it's not.
And complaining about it isn't going to make it show up any faster.
Yup. He thought he had the fandom wrapped around his finger fighting for him. But now he's getting upset that people are getting tired of it and are focusing on the characters again.
What I'm seeing here is basically people judging these movies based on Muppet content; which characters appear, how they're used, etc...
I try to judge these movies as FILMS. And while I can't really fault someone for not liking Christmas Carol as much because how it casts and uses the Muppets...
I place Muppet Caper over the first film because I enjoy looney Muppet anarachy, pretty much any time during Jim's lifetime when large groups of characters are thrown together and the results are allowed to write themselves, which we get a lot of in this movie. All the stuff in the third act...
If we're just ranking the theatrical films...
Great Muppet Caper
The Muppet Movie
Muppets Take Manhattan
The Muppets
Muppet Christmas Carol
Muppets Most Wanted
Muppet Treasure Island
Muppets From Space
I personally think all the post Jim films got worse with each consecutive release. Treasure Island wasn't as good as Christmas Carol, and MFS was easily worse than either of them. For those who don't simply give Muppet films passing grades for including a lot of older characters, VMX was far...
But the thing is, it's clear that Whitmire was TRYING to play it funny (whispering for Daniel to come closer so he could shout at him) but didn't really have the skills to do that.
There's two types of angry Jim Kermit; angry serious Kermit (which was rare, but it happened) and angry funny...
What bothers me about the tantrum is that Whitmire doesn't play it with any sense of seriousness or sincerity. It should be a moment where you really feel like Kermit is at his lowest, and while the movie does a decent job leading up to this scene, the actual outburst from Kermit feels so fake...
It kind of does.
Liking one movie over another doesn't automatically make the one you prefer better. MFS is generally accepted (and not just by Muppet fans) as a pretty terrible film. Even the people who worked on it knew it was a stinker. MMC is almost universally held up as a holiday classic...
