Early critical consensus from Cannes is fairly good. Apparently the film comes in just over two hours, has lots of action, fantastic effects, story elements that have been in the works for quite some time yet is reportedly a bit lighter on the charm of the original trilogy.

Of course some critics are bound to pan it in any case and critical reviews mean little to fans.
I'm pretty impressed. Somehow you'd expect less from a stalled franchise with a movie that wasn't supposed to be made. Speilberg himself said it was supposed to end with Indy riding into the sunset (and not Singing a song ---inside joke).

Unlike of course Rocky 6 and the new Rambo... both of which had terrible reviews, and disappeared as soon as they came out.

Anyway, went to Burger King... I can't say I don't like the toys. I'm disappointed they didn't make them Super Deformer style like the Star Wars and Spiderman toys. But they have a push button figure of Indy running from the iconic giant boulder.

Who said the franchise was stalled or that the film wasn't supposed to be made? I don't recall that ever being the case. The Last Crusade was only a title; it wasn't intended to be the last film if George Lucas could come up with a new appropriate MacGuffin. Spielberg and Ford have always been up for another Indy and will reportedly make an additional film after this is Lucas and his writers can come up with a good story and the public still wants to see it.

Lucas lives by his own schedule therefore the project is never stalled or in turn-around. The Indy franchise is very much his baby as Spielberg’s. Both talk at length about their ideas for Indiana, but much is theory until light hits celluloid. I’ve seen all the films in the theaters during their initial releases and kept up with much of the press so I don’t get these claims.

Rotten Tomatoes fresh meter was up to 80% upon last visit. Good for them!

That's what Spielberg said on an interview on some show. I guess he must have meant that he wasn't going to make another film at that point.

The thing with these long awaited movie sequals are, they usually disappoint fans, and get terrible reviews. Glad to see this isn't the case with this film.

I gotta say, I'm loving this Indiana Jones movie Merchandise. Indiana Jones edition "Galactic Heroes", and especially the Taters of the Lost Arc Mr. Potatohead.

Never go by what other people say. You yourself are the review. Make your own opinion. That's what I say.

I must admit, I wasn't keen on the idea of seeing another Indy movie. It's been too long since the last movie and I thought all were going to keep the franchise to a three picture trilogy. But I will see the movie come this friday and see if the movie is good or not.

However, I'm not the biggest Indiana Jones fan and recently saw the first and third movies on dvd and haven't seen the films in years. Both were a little shabby in the writing.

:attitude: Yeah, I agree and do that. I'm known for my independent spirit (especially around here) so I'm not sure why that sentiment is pointed toward me? However it's good to see Indy faring well. That's my point. I see most every film I can regardless of the review.

 It is also fun to handicap the scores for people into that. RT can be a useful litmus test at times in the realm of expectations going into the theater. I usually rate critics with whom I tend to agree or disagree.

:search: The Reuters/Associated Press' Christy Lemire is a good example of your post's statement. You'd think she's a critic that writes a point of view for most people, yet she mainly embodies a limited chick-flick crowd perspective that gives women reviewers and reporters a bad name. She has a track record for not liking action films, especially franchise pictures, and this appears to be no exception. Films she does like usually don't coincide with my tastes (broad as they are) so her reviews act as a sort of counter-indicator for me. She's not the only one, but a prime example.

The general repeated comments from both sides of the isle appear to be that the film starts strong, loses a little momentum in the middle and has a very Spielbergian expensive finish. I just wonder if it's better than Temple of Doom? I hope to know that answer tomorrow.

I also hope there will be more in the future. A second trilogy if there's worthy enough material.

However, I'm not the biggest Indiana Jones fan and recently saw the first and third movies on dvd and haven't seen the films in years. Both were a little shabby in the writing.
Um...gotta completely disagree with that. I mean completely. But that's your taste and I will respect that.

I saw it!

I saw it yesterday. No spoilers. I'll just say it's a solid B in my book. It's my third favorite behind Raiders and Crusade, but before Doom. I don't know why some felt is sags in the middle. The two hour film just zipped by for me - and I was seeing it while nursing a bad cold. It isn't a perfect film, but it excites me that there could be more.

Indy 4 = B (possibly a B+)

I sadly have to disagree with Jamie. I liked it, it had some really strong scenes, great acting, and a wonderful cast; but it left me empty. It cheesed out and falls behind, no longer making TOD the ******* child of the series. I give it a C+ with a lot of effort. I really really wanted to really really like this one too. It may not be worth the $10 to see though.

I'll agree with this, except that Last Crusade was probably my favorite.

This is actually the type of story George Lucas wanted to do with the fourth one years ago, but Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg didn't like it. It's nice to see they found something they could all work with and enjoy. It fits in perfectly with the type of serials the originals were based on, and I really, really liked this movie.

Personally, I'd give Indy 4 a B+.

VERY MINOR SPOILERS: Some stuff to look out for, nods to the originals (and other Lucas movies) and an army uniform with a nametag that simply says "MAN".
