Surprised, I definitely was! And I'm the kind of person who honestly doesn't believe in plastic surgery, so it was especially surprising, lol. But you're right, it's all about personal choice... whatever you feel is right for you. It is amazing how our society looks at things like that nowadays, though.

Skye: to be honest, if your friend said that, she's the one who needs plastic surgery - for a heart. She was kind of out of line in saying that.

Yes - being physically beautiful does not guarantee you're happy. I mean, look at all the celebs who keep making headlines with their run-ins with the law, divorce battles and addictions.

And then there are plenty of talented, intelligent, kind-hearted people who are happy with their lives, but who probably wouldn't merit a second look from whoever assembles the "most gorgeous people in all civilization" lists for People magazine.

(up in heaven, Richard spins the arrow to "But the glam magazine lists are about as real as the airbrushed and digitally altered photos that go with them, so tell them I said 'Your face.'")

That said, Richard might not have been in favor with any of those list writers, but that sure as heck hasn't stopped us from swooning over him. And for us, that has as much to do with the fact that he was a skilled Muppet performer and a kind-hearted human being, as it does with the fact that we think he's kind of fetching.

Yeah I mean, I'm not saying choice is a bad thing. But it is a morally neutral thing. It can be good and bad, and people use it to justify anything.

Hehe, just curious, do you drink OJ with or without the pulp? Usually I prefer not, it's kinda icky. But they say pulp makes it healthier.

Yeah those magazines have absolutely nothing to do with reality. The photos are retouched, no one really looks like that. And I do think some of these people are popular because we're TOLD we're supposed to like them. It plays into our own insecurities and need to feel "in the know." Media can be a very powerful thing, hehe. I do often admire people who find someone or something they like that's relatively unknown; that means you put more effort into it. Not that everything popular is bad, but you have to be a little discriminating. Especially when choosing your heros.

And you're absolutely right, being physically beautiful doesn't guarantee happiness at all. Sometimes, I think some people just think being beautiful guarantees happiness, unfortunately. But even if some people aren't stereotypically "beautiful," everyone is beautiful in their own way.

I think you guys are right, beauty does not guarantee happiness and it's very shallow to think it does. I think everyone's insecure and wants to be happy and they try different ways to achieve that. The problem with the beauty thing is that it's temporary. You're never going to be fully satisfied. Self confidence is something that has to come from within you; it has nothing to do with how you look or what job you have or even how successful you are. If you don't feel it, it won't happen.

Lol this reminds me of that song "Ugly" song from Muppet Show:

"Now if you're bad looking you're the lucky one! There's no effort involved in being ug-ly! (I like the way he says that lol). But if you're good looking by comparison, then it's really a catastrophe!"

"Ointment and makeup and all that you smear on your body daily. Then you wipe it all off and you put on some more! So be thankful that we are ugly!"

Lol, I loved that point about makeup, it's completely insane when you think about it. Not that I don't wear any and not that it's evil, but you can't take it too seriously.

I love that about the Muppets, it's all an extention of "Bein Green's" message. Be proud of who you are, what you look like, and be the best you can be. It was relevant at the time of the Civil Rights movement, and it's something anyone can identiy with.

Very true - and you know, I've had "Bein' Green" in my head for part of the day. It's because a group of us are working to get the school to extend its recycling program to all parts of campus, not just the main part of campus.

Same here on the makeup issue - for one thing, for me it feels really weird (and not in a good way) to have a lot of stuff smeared and painted all over my face. It makes me feel as if my face isn't clean. For another, in the mornings I'm rushed enough as it is. I don't have time to stop and meticulously brush ten different powders and paints onto my face and hands.

Lol, I never wear makeup, but I never thought about it the way it's presented in that song. When you think about it, it does seem kinda weird!

Yeah all I put on is foundation (and that's because I have acne, lol). I'm not good at putting on anything else (especially eye liner, ewwww!). I don't mind doing it sometimes, it can be fun to look nice, I just try not to obsess over it. But yeah most of the time I'm just too rushed in the morning to get it all on! Lol

For a long time I was obsessed with being less shy and more demonstrative. And that's good; it's good to improve yourself. But I also learned that, in the end, you have to love yourself, warts and all.

That's great that you are trying to extend the recycling program! It's something we all need to think more about. Btw, I know I already told Skye about this, the old kid's show Adventures in Wonderland, has a great episode about the enviornment. I wish TV focused on recycling and pollution more like it did in the early '90s:

Thanks - the students on our part of campus have been after the school to extend the program for years. But it's been denied because of the admin's concerns with other forms of green (money).

And since I come from a family where recycling, composting, water saving and other eco-friendly things are encouraged and practiced regularly, I wince every time I see someone toss a soda can or a plastic bottle or a newspaper into the garbage. Some people might call me picky - but it's the truth.

My family has always recycled, we are arguably too consistent, lol. I can't stand seeing trash on the ground either. There's no excuse for it, it's just people being lazy and arrogant.

Some campuses have recycling bins, but in reality all the trash gets put in the same place in the end. That is incredibly frustrating.
