Oh! I think I might have figured out what might have happened.

Richard's sleeping on the couch, half-dressed in his Sweetum's legs. It's the main "green" room, where they go to sleep, eat & drink, smoke, listen to music, that sort of thing. So Dave comes in to make himself a cup of coffee, or tea. Something that needs sugar.

Perhaps...Dave hears Richard snoring? And turns around and then decides to pour sugar into his mouth. XD

I'm willing to bet that all of the Muppeteers came to work hung over at least once.
The story about Dave pouring sugar into Richard's mouth, and then go tearing down the hall with Richard in hot pursuit...that's the kind of moment when you need to have a camera with you.

I'm just surprised that it was Dave pouring sugar into Richard's mouth and not the other way around. That kind of joke seems to be right up R.H.'s alley, ya know?
I'm also surprised that Richard was able to run properly in those Sweetums legs; I'd have fallen on my face in ten seconds.

Sara, I love your scenario! I was trying to figure out why Dave would be holding sugar in the first place. Works for me... I'll bet that's just how it happened!

Muppet Newsgirl, no kidding. Definite Kodak moment with those two guys running around like crazy. At first, I thought the sugar thing seemed more like something Richard would do, too... but all those guys are probably pranksters and do all kinds of weird things like that.

Well, Richard doesn't seem like the type who would like the cutesy Elmo.

I agree, he almost always seemed to play "quasi bad boy" characters, like Sweetums and Junior Gorg. Or loud, crazy characters like Don Music and Forgetful Jones. Characters who are sort of intimidating at first but nice up close.

As for M.N's statement...that's true. I mean wouldn't he have to hold up the legs with one hand? And the feet are huge. He definitely wouldn't have been able to run that fast. Maybe that's why Dave's face doesn't have a big pummel mark on the forehead. *shrugs*

And yeah, Skye. I heard that Dave was just as big a prankster. He reportedly kept threatening to "scare Don Sahlin so far out of his wits that he killed him". And he probably would have with that floating head if Don had shown up that night. *Shrugs again*

All right. I found a direct quote to why Kevin Clash claims Richard Hunt gave him up. He does not mention the hangover.

Actually I thought his Sweetums legs were held up by suspenders. Like Big Bird's bottom and feet.

Ha ha, that's weird. That happened yesterday, actually. I was mentioning the hangover Elmo situation to a friend, and her little sister came up and was like "Elmo had a hangover? What's a hangover?" We told her it was like a hang-glider but in the water.
