I got to see an episode of Kukla, Fran and Ollie recently, it was actually very funny, and surprisingly politically aware, making jokes about politics in the '60s.

I didn't realize Kevin Clash was sought after before he joined the Muppets, that's pretty cool. So Richard just happened to run into him like that? Wow lol

That is a cool story, MBM. It certainly must have been amazing for Kevin...I mean, running into a top-ranking Muppet performer like that is cool enough, but getting a pep talk from that same man...I think every single Muppet fan has dreamed about that at least once.

Here's a clip of Kukla and Ollie (minus Fran, who was a live person for any one unfamiliar) on a 1969 Perry Como Christmas special (towards the middle). Personally, I think they're adorable! Lol

Here's a much earlier one as well. Ah, early puppet violence on Televison, hehe

And yes, a pep talk from Richard, or even just running to him, would have been awesome. But I suppose this freakishly huge and loving thread is a nice substitute. Hehe

Yeah, a pep talk would have been awesome - but for most of us in the RHLC, that talk would have to be in an entirely different location, don't you know. And freakishly huge is right - this is probably one of the longest threads in the "Family and Friends" section...but it's all worth it.

Let's see, today's the 13th - ah yes, a certain someone's got a birthday in three days. Better start making a cake or something...

Hehe, well I did find something for his birthday. It's Scooter related and from what I understand pretty rare. I won't say what it is until the day though.

Thanks for the link to the show, heralde! Wow! How barbaric they look, the fact that they needed a puppet stand, the lip sync was way off, LOL! I feel spoiled! The Muppet's just come out as they are and just hand out! LOL!

You mean celebrate his birthday without the life of the party to be there himself?

You bet! I've actually been thinking a lot about his upcoming birthday. And I remember we had such a fun party last year! We sure know how to celebrate 'round here!

I know! As characters, they're pretty endearing. But as puppets, yeah pretty primitive, lol. Of course we probably couldn't have had the Muppets without them, hehe. But it does show just how different Jim Henson's puppetry was.

He was really intent on making the puppets more life like, the lip sync matching up etc. Instead of the hand just going up and down, it does what was later called "The Henson Punch", as though you are pushing the words out with your hand.

I saw another episode of Kukla, Fran and Ollie at The Museum. The whole beginning of the episode is entirely focused on Kukla literally cutting photos out of a magazine. That is, THE PUPPET is cutting them out! So it seems to take an eternity, lol. And there's very little talking, just "Oh yeah...this is for my scrap book...." I guess content wasn't considered quite as urgent at the time, lol.

Still, as I said, it also seemed to take on more serious issues, like parodying the presidential campaign. And as you can see by the Perry Como clip, they often made many adult references and jokes (something the Muppets clearly inherited  ).

Yeah, I instantly noticed the influence that Jim picked up from them! Really advance stuff for puppets at the time, but not so much of the puppetry side, LOL!
