Nicky: *pokes head outside* Well I would but I turn my back and someone takes off.
Me: You know locking me in here is not what I had in mind.
Mother: Well we have other ideas.
Nicky: Besides, Beau finished his chapter. Tis your turn now.
Beau's Chapter
Chapter Twenty-one: Mission Mingostone
"Daddy?" Ann said.
"Yes? What is it?" Mr Cole asked.
"Are you angry?"
The man knelt down to his daughter's height. "Not at you," he said. "But you have to realize that freedom has responsibility. When you girls threw off my protection, you threw us all into great danger, especially your sister."
"Can we save her?" Tabby asked. "We saved people before."
Adam stood up and paced away, guided steps, like a caged tiger. "I don't
know," he said.
Izzy leant her back against the brick wall of the cell where they were being held by Randall. "We can," she hissed. "Randall almost destroyed you, us, before you were born, he will not do it again."
"What can we do then," Grandma K asked.
"Something," Tabby insisted.
"We can't break through the magic." Ann sighed.
Izzy closed her eyes. "The magic." Her eyes flashed open. "Things are stronger than magic, connections. Mother and daughter."
"Kitten and cat," Grandma K agreed, standing.
"Sisters," Ann said quietly.
Adam placed a hand on his wife's shoulder. "Family."
Izzy arched her back and fell into cat form. "Kelly," she screamed inside her head. "This is your mother."
"Need to let it go!" Ann said, sitting cross-legged onto the floor. "The anti-magic field needs all of us."
Tabby touched the wall. "Kelly! I…we…us…the three, one, of us, must stop it!"
Adam raised his arms and then pointed them forwards, throwing a magic wave of force towards the cell wall. Holding it.
Izzy's fur rose around her neck. "Kelly, my baby, come back to us."
Outside the concrete building, Miss Mingostone and Mr Harvey came to a stop.Their journey in following the SUMS mup had been difficult and considerably complicated. Where the map indicated a road, they found a stream. The map indicated a bridge, but they encountered a valley. The map indicated a blood-red mountain, but that turned out to be microtomato-sauce which Mr Harvey had spilled while pouring over the map before they left. Half those things had been illusions, but the concrete building they faced now was as real as the lemons in Mingo's handbag.
Mingo twisted the door-handle with her feet, realized it was locked, went to Plan B.
"The key to getting something unlocked," Harvey began, but was interrupted by Miss Mingostone flipping open her bag and extracting a cute, pink skeleton key which she inserted in the lock.
"You were saying?" She smiled and opened the door.
"Never mind, I think you 'handle'd it."
"Hey," a small voice said. Kelly, in human form, standing just inside the door. "I unlocked it for you."
Miss Mingostone's eyebrows met in a frown.
In another room, Mairin lay in a long glass case, eyes closed, body laced with wires. Identical cases on either side of her held Jack and Grey. A hand rested on the case above Grey's face. "Kyle could always get what I couldn’t," a voice said.
An IV drip ran from Grey's shoulder to a plastic bag of blue liquid. Computer monitors beeped. There were suction pads attached to temples and foreheads, draining life-force and magic to a collection grid which sent on the power as backup for Evil Kyle, Vic-Clone, and Randall.
In fact, that very moment Vic and Mac were defeating the Vic-Clone. As the Clone fell to the deck of The Reunion, his own force rushed back to them, clunking through the grid, burning hot. Jack's eyes opened. Mairin's little finger twitched. Grey floated an inch above the surface she was laying on.
The hand was pulled back. Feet moved on to beside Mairin's case. Fingers slid along the wires that twisted across the case to Mairin's forehead.
"Things I wanted, pets, a girlfriend, a sister." Red eyes glowed. Evil Kyle's hand wrapped around the wire. In the next case, Jack turned his eyes and saw Evil Kyle standing over Mairin's case, saw the hand on the wire. But he was trapped and couldn't move.
Evil Kyle tugged -
Slam!
The real Kyle thudded into his evil self and they crashed onto the floor together. Jack concentrated on moving. His fingers closed into a fist.
Slam! The door opened and Kelly, Miss Mingostone and Mr Harvey ran in.
"Randall is using their power," Kelly said. "I think, I, er, overheard that when he was using me and um…you might want to free them."
Evil Kyle kicked Kyle across the room. "You aren’t me!" Kyle shouted as he slammed against a cabinet. Bottles and glasses shattered inside.
Miss Mingostone shook toothpicks from a gold-case and started inserting them under the suction-locked lid of Jack's glass case. Mairin yawned and stretched as if waking up. Kyle pulled Evil Kyle's hair. Mr Harvey worked at the computers, bringing Jack and the others out of their induced comas.
Mairin sat up fast and hit her head on the top of the case she was in. She ripped pads off her, snarled and smashed a fist through the edge of the case. Glass rained. She stepped onto the floor as Evil Kyle skidded backwards towards her.
"I take it this isn't part of the Christmas festivities," she said. "Right?" Evil Kyle stood up, glowing red all over. And she punched him in the head.
Jack stared. "That's my sister," he said, nudging Miss Mingostone as she helped him out of his wires.
Mr Harvey lifted the top of Grey's case. "Good morning, ma'am. You've just woken. Do not be alarmed, I am not standing in your bedroom."
"I got a bead on Randall," Grey said, ignoring Mr Harvey. "He's on some island. I managed to reverse track through the magic-bleeding system."
Mr Harvey nodded. "Reverse tracking is a gift of the present's future."
Kelly pointed to a radiator-looking power-grid. "You know weird man's got our magic wrapped up in there," she said. "We need to…break it somehow?" She wondered for a moment where her strength was coming from, usually she would be confused, unsure, lost about now. But instead she was leading.
Kyle walked across to Evil Kyle. "You've stolen my looks long enough," he said as he grabbed him, lifted him up, and threw him at the grid. As Evil Kyle hit the grid he broke up into pieces of dark blue psi-energy. The grid began to overheat, burning with magic and life, clunking, and bubbling, then exploding out. Pink and orange glow filled the room and everyone was lifted, floating into the air.
Jack spun across to Mairin, grabbed her wrist and pulled her too him. Grey somersaulted forward to Kyle. "You did good," she said. And he floated even higher.
Kelly stood firmly on the floor, alone. She still had to find her family, the family she had let down.
A gunshot echoed across the room, followed by a scream. And everyone found themselves falling onto the hard sand of a beach, watching as Father stabbed forward and killed Mother.
