Out of the omst beloved classic characters that sadly don't appear too much anymore, I always have save a soft spot for Herry Monster. From his gruff days as a somewhat threatening strong fellow, to his later years as a gentile giant, who was perhaps a bit too clumsy, this character has been one of my favorites.

I do feel the character had been taken for granted, and while extremely popular in the 70's, his popularity lagged a small bit in the 80's and 90's. Today, he only appears in classic clips. I do not know if it is due to the writers, or Jerry Nelson's semiretirement (He only appears as the Count and sometimes the Big Bad wolf nowadays)

So before Herry accidentally breaks this thread, let's share some memories...

Ahh... one of my FAVORITE overlooked Muppet characters on SS!

Oh, Sherlock Hemlock is also a fave of mine, if only for the weird mystery parodies...

I always liked Herry Monster. It's cool looking back at his early years from having a Fuzzy & Blue nose to a long smooth blue nose to his long (Trademark) purple nose.

One thing that always bothered me about Herry was the way his looked chenged in the late 80's & early 90's. I did not like the way his eyes and eyebrowes changed! He looked better in the 70's to the mid 80's.

He was one of the Muppet Monsters that looked like a real Muppet Monster on Sesame Street. He was great along with Grover, Cookie, Frazzle, Fenwick, Harvey, Henry, Harry, Bruce, Maurice and Stuie (Maroon & Yellow Monster).

My favorite skit with him is when Kermit has that x-ray machine...

I tried just now to find the youtube link to it, but it's been removed.

Kermit: "Now, if Harry eats a cracker...."

The X-ray skit was one of my faves, too!

I have the most adorable book called My Doll Is Lost that features Herry and how he lost this little stuffed doll and it is just so cute. I like that they made Herry kind of this big tough monster, but someone who loved teddy bears and dolls. It's almost like they were using it as a way to tell little boys, it's ok to have a favorite doll/stuffed toy.

Herry is a highly misunderstood monster. Sure, he's a big, strong, and scary-looking monster, but underneath it all, he's a real nice guy, and also real cute (yes, I'm a man and I admit to saying the C-word.). Herry does a great job at showing kids that looks can be deceiving, and you should not immediately judge someone at first glance.

Herry Monster has always been one of my favorites ever since I was little. He IS cute, and Jerry Nelson did a great job voicing him.

I remember how in the books and on merchandise, Herry Monster almost always wore pants. Usually they would be white with pink stripes (though Tom Cooke often gave Herry purple pants with orange spots). I think it would've been pretty cool if Herry had those white-and-pink pants on the show. They look good on him, IMHO.

I also remember how the Big Bad Wolf (the original version from the 1970s and early 1980s) always reminded me of Herry Monster, not just in looks, but Jerry Nelson often used his Herry voice as well. It wasn't until recently when I found out the wolf puppet was actually a refurbished early Herry puppet (the one that had the blue nose).

I remember in a classic skit where Cookie Monster and Herry were singing, UP and DOWN. Herry had a different voice for he was voiced by Jim Henson at that time.

Then they made a revised version of this skit with Jerry Nelson singing for Herry.

One of my most favorite Herry moments was when Herry and an AM girl named Louisey were singing, "I Can Sing Anything" Their singing voices sounded great together.

I remember in a classic skit where Cookie Monster and Herry were singing, UP and DOWN. Herry had a different voice for he was voiced by Jim Henson at that time.
The reason for that was because the audio was taken from a record album that had a track with Cookie Monster and "another monster" that Jim Henson voiced. I guess they decided to use the Herry puppet for that one, though Jerry Nelson has been Herry's performer since Day One.
