But then again, things like that are special occasions... love shouldn't have to be treated as a special occasion.

But eh, forgive me my V-Day Scroogeness.
No you definitely have a point as well! It goes both ways.

Thoughts on Plutonic Valentines?

I've had a few opportunities for Valentine dates, yet it's just not the right time to pursue romantic interests while I'm so busy with several jobs and so many life changes. I'm not the lonely sort, but I do wonder how much longer my rose petal gathering days can be sustained. There's one in particular person who's cute and lonely and I doodled an original picture for him with the intention of brightening his otherwise gloomy Monday next week - as a friend. He's a somewhat new friend so I don't know how he will take it. Kind of concerned about it. :embarrassed:

That's so cute! I hope he likes your picture. That's really sweet that you did that.

Don't forget this Jamie; you can always get to a person with lavish gifts like the traditional bouquet, or box of chocolates... but it's those little things that you give like that that are more special, and have more meaning than the expensive things.

At least that's what I was told when I did a similar gift-giving thing to someone special like that.

Wow, lol, you know just the other day I thinking about this thread.

I'd be lying if I said this corrupted holiday didn't bother me. But at the same time, I'm healthy and successful and you never know what will happen in life. I'm just going to turn my head and wait and for Easter, lol.
Well we all need a positive attitude. Heck I turn 33 tuesday...I might be about as broke as can be, but Im happy. I feel like I've started a new chapter, and I feel/look younger than I did a decade ago. People need to rise up out of the stuck situation or mindset they're toiling in, and tell themselves that they are worth too much to be held back...worth too much to just let life pass them by.

I know people have their physical, mental, emotional, and financial challenges(Im not immune to any of these) but shoot, ya only live once and were only on this mortal coil for a short time. Of all the infinite random chances, we are alive at this moment. Time to let the complaining give way to new beginnings and new perspectives

I must've completely grown out of being depressed and just feel completely indifferent. I honestly don't care either way about this holiday anymore. I just wish the stupid valentine sets came with Posters like they did 2 years ago. I'd've got that Phineas and Ferb set so fast. Not even wait until the after Valentines clearance for it.
I honestly am oblivious to most American holidays, be it superbowl sunday, memorial weekend or 9/11 anniversaries. People usually are all "dude, you seriously forgot today was *fill in the blank*

I've heard a lot of good things about OKCupid. Are they really completely free? I've been looking into gk2gk.com, but of course they'd force me to pay money just so I could contact some of these people
Okcupid is like the match.com for hipsters, college kids and the facebook generation. Which isnt a bad thing! I could be classified as all three.

I've found the best way to meet cool people, guy or girl, is either totally by randomchance(like you're wearing a retro/geeky shirt and someone notices) OR at a convention(comic con, anime con, sci fi con, etc)

True, but then again as a Christian I could say the same thing about Easter. Isn't Jesus' death and ressurection something Christians should be celebrating everyday?

Yes, I am a single person defending Valentine's Day. Sick I know, lol. :concern:
Well it's like Thanksgiving. Im grateful and feel blessed every day, just to be alive and have the situations I do. I think people get sidetracked or take things for granted.

Nothing is worse than a holiday you aren't allowed to celebrate, lol. And that's pretty much what Valentine's Day is, if you're not in a relationship, you can't come to the party.
I say celebrate any holiday ya want. Heck I'd celebrate Ramadan, Channukkah, or Valentines day if I wanted to. I was raised Jehovah's Witness til I was old enough to wise up and leave, but suffice to say never celebrated any holidays til my college years. So I do see the fun in why people hold onto traditions.

BUT folks...the best special moments with a special someone are very random, and not always planned. Just like a birthday doesnt have to be celebrated on the specific day

Yeah... stupid day doesn't mean anything. Can't even say it was corrupted, it was always commercial. It's basically an excuse to sell stuff. It's just THAT excuse to do THAT... and the holiday loses it's charm when you're WAAAY too old to buy those little cardboard cards and give them to your grade school class.

Speaking of which, anyone ever notice there's always that "I don't like you, but I'm obligated to give you a card" cards that say "YAY! Super Happy!" or "Cartoon Catchphrase! Valentines Yay!" ? I luckily never got piles of those, but you know what I'm talking about. There's always the "You're always gonna be my best friend" card, the "you may NOT be my best friend, but you're friendship/acquaintanceship is important and meaningful on some level to me" card, the "Girly without being lovey dovey" card, even the big double sized Teacher's card that's on the back of the box. But always with the "Oh YAY! I don't like you, hope you're not offended, this is a contractual obligation" card with those random "Happy Time!" messages that have nothing to do with Valentines day.
I still have and cherish that Beaker V-day card ya sent me way back when :excited:

Oh that is one of the best forms of visual sentiments toward someone you like or care for: making something home made. Be it even a simple napkin doodle or a song, a poem or a hand stitched wearable.

It's a good feeler to see how someone reacts to random gifts like that...a good litmus test or barometer I'd say

Thanks. I'm sure he will. It's very specific.

That's my feeling too. I'm a poor artist working from payday-to-payday so taking the time to make something is kind of like spending money to me. If anyone wants expensive things - I'm the wrong fellow. People often keep the stuff I make. Kind of amazes me that 10 minutes can mean a lot to people.

This one advanced much beyond the doodle phase. I drew him as an action figure with packaging, logo and accessories. I get carried away by my passion for the artwork so it's much more polished than intended. It's still simple looking, but anyone with an eye can tell that the composition is actually a drafted vector. I'm intending this to be a platonic expression so I've decided to send it before Valentine's Day. That way he can know someone cares about him without having all that romantic, day-specific vibe.

The thing that bugs me is the fact that our culture SAYS that's more important, but it's like saying "It's better to give than receive." Culturally, we WANT to think we're above materialism, but we are NOT. It's in animal nature to be possessive and to want.

What really gets me is the commercials that condition us to believe otherwise. It's like those commercials that say "We know that times are tough." What are they doing? Lowering prices? Hiring? Raising the quality of something? No... just making conversation and subconsciously trying to get us mad at the wrong people because we can't bury ourselves in thousands of those products, and deep down those companies KNOW they're responsible for the reason WHY times are tough in the first place. You know those commercials that are like...Families are important! Instead of eating at a restaurant, go to a chain grocery store and buy everything there.

Those diamond commercials want us to believe that's tender moments of deep loving relationships when subconsciously they're saying, if you're man's not willing to be under incredible debt for a shiny rock that a bunch of Africans died over to get, he's a total loser. They're almost as bad as those video game commercials that tell guys to forget about anything but playing with our overly masculine war game macho macho gadgets. My sister KNOWS people like that and hates them.

I like holidays, but I'm too old to celebrate 90% of them. Halloween? Last year, I spent the entire Saturday before going nuts looking for a used copy of "Groovie Goolies" and DIDN'T watch it all Halloween day. There's something I go to that's routinely scheduled opposite Easter  and it's STILL more fun that actually doing anything that day. Other than the day after candy clearances, there's nothing much fun there.

I'd love to say, "OOOOH! I hates them Valumntimes, I do!" And I'd love to say I'm never going to be with anyone, making me bitter about the whole thing, but I've completely gotten out of that. I honestly don't care. On the positive side, I don't have to buy anyone anything or make any effort. Can't say what the negative side is here, but we know what I mean. Too bad Valentines Candy kinda sucks, or I'd be happier about the clearance stuff. now Easter... I could lose a months worth of money in Easter clearance, and I wouldn't even touch those Peeps yet.

As far as VDay candy goes, you get the standard Russel Strover heart shaped chocolate bars with some sort of filling, Palmer's chalky candy heart shaped (give me the monstery eye ball and disembodied body parts anyday. I'll forgive the chalkiness then), and those candy hearts. Maybe the heart shape boxes, but you know half of them are recalled back to the company to be repackaged in square anytime boxes.

That said, every year I manage to buy a box of kid's Valentines, open them up, lose them on the floor in the passing of a year, and wind up having to throw them all away anyway. I don't know why....
