There's an abandoned airport outside Monstropolis? I guess I wasn't really paying attention or we just never passed by the airport.

Can a rat outrun a unicorn? I doubt it, even with all the Haste spells in the world.

For all we know, Steve could be just bluffing and he's actually slow. And we haven't seen you ran as fast a you can in rat form, maybe you are faster than expected.
