Chapter nineteen
“Could someone please pass the butter?”
“Who else wants syrup?”
“Hey Chef! We need more pancakes!”
“Rizzo! My Cap’n Alphabet is sending me a message!”
“Not again...”
“So I told him that was the craziest thing I’d ever heard of, and-“
“No, Who’s on first. What’s on second.”
“What?”
“He’s on second.”
“Do we have any more muffins?”
“You done with that?”
“Can some one PLEASE pass the butter?”
“Hey toss the salt down here!”
“Who wanted butter?”
“Ah! Hey! Stop throwing salt!”
“Well you said to toss it...”
Scooter shook his head. It was just typical. He looked around the table. Yup, just the typical chaos. Everyone sitting in their various seats, scarffing at the food on the table, and demanding more. Well, at least Kermit was back to normal, sitting at the- wait. Why wasn’t Kermit in his chair? Scooter looked around, but the leading frog was nowhere to be seen. “Hey guys?” he said. “Where’s Kermit?”
They looked around. “Maybe he’s still in his room,” Fozzie suggested.
“I’ll go check,” Gonzo said. He jumped out of his chair and headed upstairs. A few minutes later he was back, shaking his head. “He’s not in his room, or the bathroom, or the line for the bathroom.”
“Has anyone seen him yet today?” Clifford asked.
They shook their heads.
“No,” Rowlf said. “I haven’t seen him since last night, when we were singing with the piano.”
“Moi haven’t seen him either,” Miss Piggy said.
“Well where’d he go?” Rizzo said.
“You don’t think he’d run out on us, do ya?” Dr. Teeth asked.
Floyd was shaking his head. “Something’s been wrong with the frog, but he wouldn’t just leave,” he said.
“You never know, okay,” Pepe said. “Maybe he just got sick of us.”
“I for one am not at all surprised,” Sam said. “This house is full of weirdoes.”
“You fit right in, Sam,” Scooter said.
“No,” Robin said firmly. “Uncle Kermit wouldn’t just leave us. He was back to normal last night. And he cares about us.” He looked around. “Doesn’t he?”
“Of course he does,” Fozzie said. “We’re his friends. And, and he’s our friend.”
“Right,” Dr. Teeth said. “But where is he?”
They were quiet. They didn’t know where Kermit was.
“Well come on, guys,” Clifford said as he stood up. “We gotta go find him.”
They nodded, and stood up.
Just then the front door opened, and they heard some one singing.
“Together again. Gee, it’s good to be together again!” They ran to the door, and there was Kermit.
“I just can’t imagine that you’ve ever been gone...” He closed the door.
“It’s not starting over...” He set a slim paper bag on the floor so it leaned against the wall.
“It’s just going on!” He turned to face them with a huge smile. “Good morning, everyone!”
They stared at him. Miss Piggy stepped forward. “Kermie, we were worried!” she said. “Where have vous been?”
“You’ll see,” he said, and he gave her a little peck on the cheek. “So, what’s for breakfast?”
They heard an explosion come from the kitchen.
Clifford sighed. “Well, we
were having pancakes...” They started migrating back to the table.
“Kermie?” Miss Piggy put a gloved hand on her frog, stopping him. “Did vous just kiss moi?”
“Yes, Miss Piggy, I just kissed you,” Kermit said, and he turned to walk towards the table.
She gasped. “Oh, Kermie!” She pounced on him, smothering him with kisses.
He wiggled out of her arms. “Not now, Piggy,” he said. “I haven’t had anything to eat yet today.” He hurried to the table, hoping there was still some food left.
Miss Piggy watched him go and sighed. “He loves me...”
Soon it was time to go to the theater. “Okay everyone,” Kermit said as he led the Muppets to the door. He stopped and picked up the paper bag he had left there. “Here we go!”

Robin was sitting on his uncle’s desk backstage. “What’s in the bag, Uncle Kermit?” he asked.
Kermit smiled. “Well, I’ll show you,” he said. He reached into the paper bag, pulled out a large picture frame, and held it up to show Robin. “See? Whaddaya think?”
Robin looked at it, surprised. “You got the letter framed?”
“Yup,” Kermit said. “I was thinking we could hang it right here.” He held it up to the wall.
“It looks really nice, Uncle Kermit,” Robin said.
Kermit nodded. “I think so, too,” he said. He put the frame on his desk.
Scooter walked over. “Hey Boss,” he said, “About the closing number, you said you were going to write it, and-“
“Scooter, I am a very busy frog,” Kermit interrupted.
“I know that, but Kermit-“
“I mean I have a theater to run here,” Kermit said.
“Yes Boss, I know, but-“
“I mean we’re putting on a show in six nights,” Kermit went on.
“Yeah, I know, but Boss-“
“And I have to make sure we have all the props, the sets, and the costumes, and make sure everyone knows what they’re doing,” Kermit said.
“Yes, but Boss, the-“
“Which is why it’s a good thing I already wrote the closing number like I said I would,” Kermit said as he handed Scooter a piece of paper.
“Good,” Scooter said. “That’s what I was trying to remind you of.”
“I know,” Kermit said. “That’s why I gave you a hard time. But listen, everyone is in it, and we don’t have long to learn it. So if you could get everyone on stage-“
“Oh sure Boss, right away,” Scooter said.

Once everyone was onstage, it took almost an hour for Kermit to tell them where to stand and actually get them to stand there.
“Okay, quiet down,” he said finally. “Is everyone in the right place?”
“It looks good to me, Chief,” Scooter said.
Kermit turned to the go-fer standing next to him. “Yes, it looks very good, except that you should be over there, between-“
“Oops! Sorry Boss!” Scooter hurried to his proper spot.
“Okay,” Kermit said. “Now everyone, memorize where you’re standing. Look at the people around you, and remember who they are. This is where you’ll be at the very end of the show. Fozzie and Miss Piggy?”
“Yeah Kermit?” Fozzie said.
“Yes, my love?” Miss Piggy said.
“I’ll be standing between you two.”
“Okay,” Fozzie said.
“Now, does anyone have any questions so far?” Kermit said.
“Hey Kermit?” Johnny said. “What are we gonna be doin, just- standing here?”
“I’ll explain that in a minute,” Kermit said.
“Kermie?” Miss Piggy said. “What will we be wearing?”
“It’ll be different for everyone,” Kermit said. “Basically, whatever you wear for most of the show, you’ll wear for this. Now Piggy, I know that’s a little more difficult for you to figure out, so we’ll talk about it later. Any more questions?”
“Yeah, when are we gonna learn this number already?” Floyd said.
“Right now,” Kermit said. “Okay, it starts like this...”
