I was afraid this was going to come sooner or later. How heartbreaking, but at least he lived a good life delighting millions of children across the globe for over 50 years. It seems fitting that his last public appearance would be the lighting of the Empire State Building to mark the show's 50th Anniversary.

This definitely wasn’t something I wanted to hear on my birthday, but alas, R.I.P Caroll. Thank you for all your wonderful work as Big Bird and Oscar on Sesame Street. I’m very happy to have gotten the chance to meet you and your wife Debbie a year ago. I was really hopeful he would make it through the final year of this decade, but alas, life ain’t always fair like that. Rest easy, old friend. 💔
