there were a few good things about the special edition, particularly in a new hope, but overall, they're just not as good...most of the stuff that was added is jarring, particularly in jedi...

it's too bad the originals won't be rereleased...luckily I still have them on VHS, but sadly only in pan & scan...

Yeah, I bought the original version on VHS before the special editions were released, just in case. I'm glad I did!

Well, there's an online campaign starting up about this (no big surprise). I first found out about all of this from a DVD site I visit often, and they were so upset about everything that they were promoting this campaign's site. Visit http://www.originaltrilogy.com to sign up for the mailing list if you're interested.

I bought the original version in widescreen, thank goodness I did. I agree with all of you, while A new hope had some neat things in it I don't think what was added was that good.

It is very disappointing to hear Lucas won't be releasing the originals. I dispise that Greedo fires first and that Luke screams. Like Ken said, Luke falling silently really meant so much to the story, adding the scream destroys the entire mood and flow of the movie.

And someone please tell me what is with Vader's extened part after Luke falls, I liked when he said "Bring my shuttle" very angry. It sounded better than what is there now.

I often think that in meeting Lucas has while explaining everything the people around him say things like "(Yeah, that is great George, top notch." and never tell him how bad something might really be.

By the way, love these smiles...

The most worrisome thing about the issue is that it sounds like he still isn't finished tinkering with the movies. From what I've read on the net, he plans on doing a super-duper "final" version of the original trilogy for DVD release once he's finished with Episode III. Supposedly, this will make all six movies work better together. That might just be net rumor, but I've read it on a couple of credible sites, so I'm fairly convinced it's true. There's no telling how far we'll end up from the originals once everything's finished.

I'm not sure ... I haven't heard anything either way. It's probably too early on to tell. Fans originally thought that someone else was going to be directing Episode II (at one point, it was supposedly going to be the director of ESB), but Lucas ended up doing it.

Yeah I forgot about that. Friggin' Lucas! That was a great moment. You could tell even with the mask on that Vader was FUMING under all that black because he failed and let Luke slip through his fingers. Changing it to a phoned in line and having all that pomp and circumstance leading up to the Star Destroyer chase was meaningless.

Lucas said he changed all that, in an interview, because he felt like people didn't really understand why or how Vader ended up on the Executor. Well, he said BRING MY SHUTTLE! Do you need to spell it out? Again, an insult to the intelligence of the average viewer.

Arghhh...this stuff gets me steamed.

But I do love the stuff...

I love Star Wars too, but this stuff really ticks me off.

If you think about that scene with Vader and the Shuttle all the shots of the shuttle and landing on the Super Star Destroyer...

They are all cut and pasted in from the beginning of Jedi when Vader arrives on the New Death Star. That really sets me off that they took the time to change it but not make new shots or landing bay effects. Change just for changes sake. :smirk:

(Ok, think calm happy thoughts. I think maybe George better look out for all us Star Wars fans, he wouldn't like us when we are angry) Looking forward to the Hulk movie, can you tell. LOL

Well, lets just all hope and pray that the super-deluxe ultra-special edition that Lucas does release has an extra musical number or two. I just can't get enough of that Sy Snootles. Maybe she and the Max Rebo Band can jam with the Cantina Band? I'm sure they can find a place somewhere for an all song-and-dance spectacular tribute to the forgotten bounty hunters of Star Wars.
