Sure it's funny, but it's also kind of disturbing to look at.

Yeah, it was a good one! I hadn't seen it before (I don't watch the show often any more) so it was cracking me up.

Good timing to rerun it too, with the recent hullabaloo in the Star Wars fan world over Lucas's announcement that he'd never release the original trilogy in their original format on DVD. :boo:  :grouchy:

Ugh.

That means I have to live with Luke's scream when he jumps off of the gantry at Cloud City???? I can live with the schmooey CGI animation and additions--but can't STAND that !!!! It totally removes the power of the moment--robs Luke of what growth he's gained, and makes him into that whiney farmboy all over again!

I've said too much. The Lucastapo will be stopping by shortly. I'll see you all around.

Can I ask a stupid question? I've not really seen all the special edition Star Wars epidsodes, as I didn't want my memories of the originals to be tampered with.

What did they do to Luke screaming?

He still screams, doesn't he? I thought he still screamed. I don't know. I've got both versions, so it gets confusing.

Nate, if you don't want your "memory of the originals to be tampered with", you can most likely find the original versions on tape on ebay or something. If you get the right release, shouldn't be too expensive. Personally, the Special Editions are worth seeing. They're good, and if you really don't like them, at least you'll have the originals on tape to return to.

Either that or you can normally find the originals at a library or something.

Super Scooter,

I already own the originals, as they were originally made on VHS in a boxed set, along with the original making of documentary and some other fun Star Wars stuff.

I refuse to see the special editions. I view them as the same thing as Disney's prequals. The originals are very special to me, I was the first generation to be immersed in Star Wars culture, and I find going back and tampering with movies like that a little frightening. Its no different then coloring movies. Leave them alone as the classics they are.

This week I picked up bootlegs of the original trilogy on DVD. They are DVD's that have been recorded from the original laserdisc.

Now I will give Lucasfilm props for one thing...the Special Editions do have far superior film quality...the old masters were faded in a lot of spots, and you can see that on these DVD's, or on the old videos I have. The Special Edition film quality is tight.

BUT...while I liked some of the Mos Eisley shots and the final battle enhancements of Star Wars, I do feel like the old cut should be included on any new Special Special Edition sets. It is a classic that should be preserved, at least for posterity.

As for Luke screaming, Greedo shooting first, Baby Jabba, all that crap...oy VAY I hope they change that again when the new "versions" finally do make it to DVD. In the original TESB, Luke silently decided to pass into oblivion, rather than face a life devoted to the dark side of The Force and then luckily gets sucked into an exhaust pipe. Putting a scream in there, one that isn't even Hamill I might add, is ridiculous and destroys the poignancy and ultimate defeat experienced by Luke in that moment, and his triumph at his decision. The shriek is frankly insulting to the intelligence of the audience.

Yeah...I get nutty over Star Wars.

Ken, I agree 100% with you on Luke's screaming in TESB! That has irked me since the day I saw it. Nowadays, I just hit "MUTE" on my remote control.

I also agree that they could have done better with Jabba.

I agree. I don't really care if he redoes the movies and messes around with them, but I want the originals included as well (preferably nicely remastered). Lucas should follow the lead of the E.T. Special Edition DVD, which included both the original version that we all remember, and his new "improved" version.
