‘’Love, you are love.
Better far than any metaphor can ever, ever be.
Love, you are love.
My mystery of love!’’
It’s always good to remember that sometimes, things don’t turn out the way we plan them- sometimes, they turn out much worse. A party, a girls’ night out, or even a would-be rendezvous can all be ruined just as easily as they are thought of. The most shocking times are the ones that are out of our control- and barely out of our control at that. Yes, even the most meticulous of plans can sometimes go awry, especially when the worst case scenario was something already thought of….
A heavy, husky air whirled around them as the gang sat there, basking in their enjoyment. Murals of John Wayne and other famous television cowboys surrounded everywhere wall in every compartment of the place, while the tops of the walls were adorned with bull horns and ropes. The only thing in sight that broke the Western theme was the very back room of the restaurant. There, on the very back wall, held in a glass case, was the jersey of famed football player Brian Urlacker; one of the few, if not, the only professional football player to come from their state. Other than that, it was a western style restaurant to a tee, the Frontier.
Even the menu agree with the wild west. There were all kinds of burritos, chili, green chili cheeseburgers, wevos rancheros, chalupas, grilled cheese, and not to mention just about any kind of breakfast food that one could imagine—served all day! It is also worth mentioning that the Frontier had the bragging rights of having the best hashbrowns and green chili cheeseburgers in town, in addition to being voted the best restaurant in the state by the people for the past five years. Needless to say, in a word, the Frontier had it going on.
It was here, in the third room behind the registers, with Paintings of John Wayne as ‘The Duke’, that Robin and his friends were found this night. They were all having a great time, laughing and catching up. That is, at least the boys and Megan were having a good time. Robin was, well, not talking much. He was in a state of what one would call- ‘’twitterpation.’’ For those who are unaware, this is a highly infectious state, where a person might appear to be there physically, but mentally, completely off into another world. Symptoms include dizziness from sudden euphoria, singing to oneself, an overwhelmingly positive outlook on the world, sudden care for hygiene and personal grooming habits, apparent daydreaming, and perhaps, if the case is particularly bad…a certain attachment to a technological device: ie a telephone or computer. Yes, Robin could slowly, but surely feel himself coming down with some of this tonight, and what’s worse; before, he could only acknowledge his feelings for Megan in his head…now the infection was starting to flow down-to his heart.
Robin spun his straw around and around in his soda glass, creating a tiny but powerful whirlpool- literally, in the palm of his hands. His mouth curled up into a kittywompus smile as his eyes fiercely fixated on Megan’s lovely blonde hair. While he was looking t here, he couldn’t help but notice the pretty necklace she was wearing, and the lovely clothes that complimented her figure in just the right way. No, Robin’s mind was somewhere else entirely.
He caught himself staring at the way the remaining glints of sunshine shone in her hair; it made her look so beautiful and angelic to him. The length of her eyelashes when she blinked, the sound of her laugh, the sight of her smile- from head to toe, she was just lovely. And it all made Robin smile. It made him smile a lot.
‘’Hun, I’m home!’’ The other members of the gang guffawed at Josh’s joke, all except for Robin, of course. A certain glaze was over his eyes as he stared off into his own romantic wonderland.
‘’Uh, hello? Earth to Robin? You there? Wake up!’’ Forcibly, Robin did come out of his dreamy reverie- but only because of the light slap on the back he received from Josh. He came too, staring around at his surroundings, and then finally at his friends.
‘’Huh? No Eric, I don’t like onions in my hashbrowns.’’
The friends all looked around at each other, each giving their own glance of perplexity and look as it to say, ‘’What??’’
‘’Dude, nobody said anything about onions. I was telling a joke.’’
‘’I know,’’ Robin quickly lied. He then fished through his mind for something that would justify what he said…..nothing. So..
‘’I was erm..just saying, before you ask, you know..because uh…because you guys…givie me your onions…I think?’’
‘’I don’t think he was going to. You wolfed yours down like, ten minutes ago,’’ Bryan pointed out. Just then, Robin looked down at his plate, and it was indeed, completely bare. The only evidence at all that there w as once anything on the plate were the remnants of some dried ketchup towards the bottom of the plate. It was enough to make Robin feel stupid on top of turning the green frog red. Very red.
‘’Are you ok, Rob? You don’t seem like yourself.’’ Asked a concern Megan.
‘’Hm? Oh yeah, yeah, I’m fine, I was just um.. I think I’m just tired, is all. Um…’’ Robin got up, pulling his wallet from his jacket pocket, and went up to pay the bill. Robin didn’t notice it, but Megan was watching him every step of the way, and turned her head back only when she thought she saw him looking back. When she did though, it was almost enough to give her whiplash-from the side.
‘Dashing,’ Megan thought. ‘He is just….dashing.’ The thought of Robin paying not only for her meal, but also for everyone else’s put a streak of interest in her eye…in more ways than one…
‘’Man, he’s got it bad, ‘’ Josh whispered to Bryan, gently elbowing him in the ribs. The others only nodded in agreement. Megan, after hearing this, only blushed. Good thing her hair was too long for anyone to see…
‘’Yeah, like I didn’t hear that,’’ Robin grumbled under his breath. By now, Robin had returned to the table, and pulled something else out of his pocket. This time, it was a tip chart that he was consulting. When Robin had started getting to that certain age, Kermit blessed him with certain gifts to carry with him, as well as some extra lessons in manhood. Much to Megan’s amazement, she watched him as he carefully calculated the amount he should leave, and smile as he delved into his wallet once more.
‘’So let’s see, that should be five, six, seven- oh well, they work hard. ‘’ The friends all looked in amazement as Robin so generously left two five dollar bills under his soda glass along with a note written on a napkin that read ‘’Thank you!’’ with a tiny smiley face in the corner.
‘’Well guys, I think that’s all she wrote for tonight. Thanks again for all your help, but I think I’m gonna call it a night.’’
‘’But- we just got here!’’ Eric protested. ‘’and we never get to see you anymore!’’
‘’I know, it’s just that- I’m really tired, and I’d kind of like to hit the hay a little early tonight, if you don’t mind.’’ As if. Robin wanted to be at that party and he knew it. He just needed an excuse to get away.
‘’But-‘’ Eric started to object again. But before he could start a fuss, Megan cut him off quickly.
‘’Leave him alone guys, he’s been working all day. We’ll just make plans for next weekend to do something together.’’ With a flip of her lovely blonde hair and what Robin could have sworn was a wink, she added, ‘’Right?’’
‘Bewitching,’ Robin thought. ‘She is just….bewitching.’
‘’Uh, erm..yeah, yeah, because Ii’ll be here, and the, they, yeah, will be , they will, uh, and then….yeah, we’ll shoot for next weekend.’’
‘Did that sound convincing at all?’ he wondered. Mentally, he slapped himself in the head.
‘’Besides,’’ Megan added, ‘’I’m kind of tired myself.’’
Bryan, Eric, and Josh all looked at each other, sharing the same look.
‘Oh yeah, he’s got it bad.’
‘’So ok, off and on our way then.’’ The guys and Megan all looked reluctantly around at each other, none of them truly wanting to go anywhere. Alas, though, it had to be done. Somewhere between a walk and a stomp, they all began to make their way out the door, when,
‘’Wait! Can someday please give me a ride home? You know—he’s there.’’ Megan looking longingly at all four guys, but none of them seemed to succumb to her request. Still, that wouldn’t stop her from begging.
‘’Josh? Please.’’
‘’Can’t. I’m riding with Eric. ‘’
‘’Well then can you take me, Eric?’’
‘’You know I would if I could sweets, but I just got my provisional. I can only have one passenger in the car at a time.’’
With a look more and more desperate with each no she got, she turned to Bryan with a great look of despair yet with a glimmer of hope.
‘’Bryan?’’ If she had official lips, she would have been poking them out along with the puppy dog eyes she shot out for him. Little did she know that her skills were to be for naught, as he, quite reluctantly, had to decline as well.
‘’Sorry Megan, but I have a curfew. You remember what happened the last time I took you home, don’t you?’’
‘’Yes, I remember,’’ she said with a downcast look. Bryan’s face welled with tenderness, and he placed a rare compassionate hand on her shoulder.
‘’You can’t always hide from him, you know. You’re going to have to face him sooner or later. The trick is, though, are you going to rule the situation, or are you going to let it rule you? You have to decide, Meg.’’
‘’Yeah, I know,’’ she said dismissively. ‘’Thanks anway.’’ With a hug from each of the boys, she took her seat back in the booth where they just were with a heavy sigh on the way down.
‘’You know,’’ said Robin with his hand loosely on the table. ‘’ I don’t have any passengers in my car, I have my full license, and I don’t have a curfew. So, I mean, it’s a boring 20 minute drive home, I mean when it’s just me, but with you in the car, it might not be so boring. ‘’
‘’What?’’ asked a surprised Megan.
‘’C’mon, I’ll take you home.’’
‘’No, I couldn’t do that,’’ she started. ‘’I’ve already taken so much from you today. No- I – I couldn’t.’’
‘’Oh sure you could,’’ Robin said with a charming smile. Compared to the others, you eat like a bird, so what all have you taken from me other than my friendship and my taste in food? My taste in food, I figure you could probably live without, but my friendship, I definitely want you to have.’’
At that moment, a sudden spark went off in Robin’s mind, one that he wasn’t used to feeling.
‘Wait, am I flirting with her? Nah, not me. I don’t flirt- do I?’
He shook of the thought and came to to Megan still trying to protest.
‘’But Robin, I-‘’ He cut her off gently and swiftly by pressing a finger to her lips. He then bent down to where she was sitting and whispered, ‘’Not another word.’’ It was in a firm, yet sweet way that he said it, and it made Megan giggle inwardly.
‘’Now then,’’ he said as he fetched her coat, ‘’our chariot awaits us.’’ He held out the jacket by both arms and helped Megan into it. Megan smiled her thanks to him, and couldn’t help but feel like… a princess for just a minute. Now came the topper, Robin opened the door with a ‘’Madam,’’ and waited for her to go first. When she did, (with a little apprehension of course) Robin placed a comforting hand on the small of her back. The feel of his touch shocked Megan at first, but after a few seconds, it was quite comforting. Still, though, she wanted closure to know what it was for.
‘’Robin, what are you doing?’’
‘’Well, this is a dangerous part of town, especially at night,’’ he said soothingly.
At that, Megan bent her head back down, looking straight ahead. Reason enough, she thought. For a few brief shining moments, they walked just like that, until finally they got to Kermit’s car. Once again, Robin opened the door for her, and closed the door behind her. As he made his way to the driver’s side of the car, he couldn’t help but let the tiniest little smile dance across his face as he thought of the wonderful company he had waiting for him just in the other side of the car.
