Regarding the discussed re-make of Casablanca with JLo and Ben Affleck:

How in the -- insert word here -- can "they" remake Casablanca? IMO, the closest film that ever got close to Casablanca was Tailor of Panama (Great film, BTW, if you haven't seen it). It has the perfect cast (Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Rush and Jamie Lee Curtis); and I think that movie is an indication that part of Hollywood is still smart, and that the place hasn't yet died.

I don't have a problem with re-makes. What I have a problem with is people who want to "update" the films to make them more hip and cool. And face it: that's what exactly a movie with these two actors will do.

A re-make of this type needs people like Geoffrey Rush, Pierce Brosnan, Harrison Ford, Robert Redford, etc. You know, more old-fashioned & classic-type actors.

Not Ben Affleck. Not JLo. They're good actors (JLo is actually underestimated in some of her films, I think), but I cannot imagine them in the roles of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

I remember an SNL Headling News segment about this. Tina said that Ben and J-Lo were re-making Cassablanca for all those folks who liked Cassablanca but wished it was awful.

I saw Matchstick Men last night (I got the first ticket to the second showing) and it was amazingly BRILLIANT! You kinda get the gist of how smart it is within the first ten minutes, but don't ever guess JUST how intelligent the movie turns out to be until the last ten.

I have a new respect for Nicholas Cage as an actor now. I don't know why, but, in anything else I'd seen him in, I don't recall liking him that much, but maybe that's just me. In this he was wonderful! It's not everyday you see a movie about an obsessive/compulsive con artist.

I'd say it ranks right up there with The Sting as the critics claim it does.

I think that looks like a good movie. There are a lot of movies coming out now that I think would be worth seeing. I also really want to see Second-Hand Lions, and The Fighting Temptations looks cute. Cuba Gooding Jr. was on Letterman before Simon and Garfunkel on Friday and the movie looked pretty funny. (Great clip: He's in church and his cell phone rings as the anthem is about to begin, and the preacher glares at him and says, "Son, if that ain't Jesus callin', shut it off!" )

Oh, it's deffenitely worth seeing. There are a few parts where it gets you thinking "well, what's the point?" It all comes around in the end.

I don't want to give away too much. But, boy is it hard not to!

Ah, ya gotta love movie fest time!

Boys from County Clare: Charming Irish movie about 2 brothers competing in a Ceili Band contest. (Colm Meany and Bernard Hill star).

The Cooler: Gritty, yet quirky movie about the dark side of Vegas. William H. Macy leads a stellar cast, as a guy with bad luck, working for a casino, to bring bad luck to high rollers on a hot streak.

Danny Deckchair: Cute Australian movie, pays homage to the Wizard of Oz. After misfit Danny attaches balloons to his deckchair, he travels to Clarence, where he falls for Glenda, a lonely cop. (Was better than I'm making it sound.)
