I saw Rob Zombie's Halloween yesterday. It's not a sequel or continuation of any of the previous films. It's a partial remake of the original. The first hour or so is devoted to Michael Myers' early childhood and the attempts of a kindly psychiatrist (Malcolm McDowell) to try and figure Mikey out. The second half picks up with a now-grown Michael escaping from the asylum and returning to his hometown. This is where the remake proper begins.

First and foremost, this is a Rob Zombie film all the way. If you've seen one or both of his previous films, you'll pretty much know what to expect in terms of content. It's a much better film than any of the sequels. In fact, I would put this one alongside John Carpenter's original. And this is an INTENSE film. I'm surprised Zombie got away with as much as he did, considering this is a major studio release, whereas his last two were independents. In fact, MGM/Dimension Films has signed Zombie on two make two more films of his choice, that's how much they had faith in this project. Plus, the studio allowed Rob to reshoot/rework/add some new scenes to the workprint up to something like two months ago. I've read a synopsis of the workprint (the film that was supposed to be released), and I think Zombie's additional reshoots and deletions improved the finished project.

I'm a horror junkie, and Rob Zombie's Halloween was more than satisfying. IMO, it's currently the best of his three features. I can't wait to see what he'll come up with next. I just don't want to see a sequel. Rob himself has said that he has no intention of doing a sequel. He made the film he wanted, and he's done. He's moving on to other projects. The film as it stands now ends perfectly, and a sequel would sap the power out of the film's final image.
