While Ruahnna made some points I agree with in regard to Brian Henson and Jim Lewis, it pretty much sums up how I've been feeling for a while.
Of course it makes sense to have a visionary at the helm of the Muppets, directing each project with the heart that moved us all so long ago. And more time passes since May 1990, the further and further the Muppets drif away from what they were.
It is my firm believe that the Muppets can never an will not ever again be what they were when Jim Heson was alive. Jim was the pres., the CEO, the owner, the decision maker, the recruiter and yes... just as Ruahnna put it...the Dad.
All the more reason for the impossibility of Muppet Magic to endure without him. And with the abscence of Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson and Richard Hunt - the are not "The Muppets" anymore.
The pres, CEO, owner, decision maker and recruiter now, is not a visionary with a heart of gold, but a coporation with corporate interests, corporate motivations and corporate motivation - with hundreds of other higher-priority non-muppet characters and projects to run.
No matter how much fans would or would not want Brian Henson, Jim Lewis, or whoever to 'guide' the Muppets today - this simply will not happen the way a huge corp. like Disney divides its creative labour supplies. It's over - the Muppets are now a side-bar during parade time and gift shop articles. Even if there is another pilot, show, movie... expect another OZ at best, because demographics dictate Disney's projects, not simple artistic expressions or caring about projects the way Jim Henson did.
What's wrong with the Muppets? They are a product of Disney now. Nothing against what Disney is. I wouldn't expect any different from Disney. My point is this; the state of the Muppets wouldn't be what it is if JHC didn't put them up for sale.
