What are the odds...
A party of four stops outside the doorway to the 1st floor common room. Catherine (Ru) is in the lead, holding Fozzie's hand. Fozzie has his other hand over one ear and is la-la-la-ing to himself, and Catherine holds two presents in one hand and looks a little harried. Behind her are sounds of sniping.
"...none of your beeswax!"
"Oh yeah? Well I say it is my business if you're going to--"
"Oh look who's suddenly interested in my whereabouts?"
"What do you mean suddenly? I told you--"
"Sell it to somebody who cares."
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah!"
Catherine stops abruptly and Kermit and Piggy crash unceremoniously into her back, knocking her and Fozzie forward a step. Catherine turns around and glares at her other two roomies. She does not look amused.
"Okay--I've officially had it with you two!"
"Huh?"
"What?"
"Don't huh and what me! I've been listening to you two bicker for two days now--two whole days! You're driving me crazy and just look what you're doing to Fozzie." (Fozzie looks miserably from behind his hat, where he has been hiding his face.)
Kermit has the good grace to look sheepish, but Piggy is unrepentant.
"It is not moi's fault that he has been acting so--"
"ME? You're the one who--"
Catherine: (holding up her hand) Aah! Uh uh uhh! I am not having this! We are about to go into a party and you are NOT going in having this stupid argument.
Kermit: (sullenly) I don't think it's stupid. (Piggy sulks.)
Catherine: (glaring at both of them) Stupid doesn't even begin to describe it. (Turning on Piggy suddenly.) Tell him!
Piggy: (looking astonished and betrayed) I will not!
Kermit: Ah ha!
Catherine: (fixing Kermit with a stare) And you be quiet. Piggy--tell him or I'll tell him. This is going to END. NOW.
(Piggy huffs and puffs for a few minutes, looking mutinous, but eventually shrugs her shoulders and sighs.)
Piggy: (mumbling) I was at the hospital.
Kermit: What? The...the hospital? Why?
Piggy: (unintelligible mumbling)
Kermit: Say again?
Catherine: A little louder, please, dear.
Piggy: I was at the hospital visiting Bean.
Kermit: Bean Bunny? Little guy lives down the--
Piggy: Cute? Annoying? That's him. We were taking a class together and the professor asked me to take him notes from class.
Kermit: (Looking flustered and embarrassed) Well, if you were at the-- (He stops, frowns and scrunches up his face, eventually turning to her suspiciously.) You can't have been visiting him the whole time.
Catherine: (slapping hand over forehead) Of for the love of Pete! (Fozzie starts la-la-la-ing again.)
Piggy: I didn't say I was visiting him the WHOLE TIME.
Kermit: You didn't even come home one night! I know--cause I was waiting up for you! We arranged the whole room just to surprise you and you never even came home that night!
Piggy: (looking at Kermit differently, her eyes soft) You waited up for moi?
Kermit: (still mad) I sure did! (He sees the look in Piggy's eye and it takes some of the angry wind out of his sails.) Um, that is, I was waiting but I fell asleep in the recliner and when I woke up, you weren't home.
Piggy: (gently) I didn't see you when I came in.
Kermit: (flustered) You came in?
Piggy: Of course I came in! What did you think....oh, Kermie. (Her voice is reproachful, but sweet. She puts a hand on his arm.) I didn't see you or I would have spoken. I left the next morning very early for an audition in the city. I was trying to get back in time for my class.
Kermit: Audition? I didn't know....
Piggy: You didn't ask. When I got back, you were giving moi the third degree and I didn't like it. I didn't know why you were being so snotty, and it made me mad, too.
Kermit: (a little hurt) You never even said anything about the room.
Piggy: Oh. It looked nice. I was a little hurt that you did it without me.
Kermit: Oh. We never thought, um.... Sorry. We didn't mean to exclude you. I didn't think you'd be interested in moving the furniture.
Piggy: I wasn't. But I could have made some suggestions about style.
(They look at each other a little hopefully. Piggy already has her hand on his arm, so it is easier for her to lean in and give him a quick little hug.)
Piggy: Sorry. (She tries to pull away, but Kermit holds on a little longer, giving her a whole hug. When they break apart, he is still holding her hand.)
Kermit: Me, too. Do you--would you like to add the finishing touches to the room? I mean, you live there too. We want you to feel at home there.
Piggy: Oh, Kermie.
Kermit: So, after the party we can finish our room?
Piggy: That would be nice.
Catherine looks relieved, and Fozzie has stopped singing to himself.
Catherine: Was that so hard?
(Piggy and Kermit look at each other and smile. Kermit steps forward and hugs Catherine, then Fozzie.)
Kermit: We're sorry. We--I acted like a big jerk. I'm sorry we acted so silly.
He turns to Piggy, who looks at him blankly, but she relents when he hauls on her hand.
Piggy: Sorry. (She reaches out and gives hugs Fozzie, who is still hugging Kermit.) We didn't mean to make you two miserable.
Fozzie: Please don't fight any more. I hate conflict!
Catherine: (sighing deeply) Now can we just go in to the party? We're going to miss all the fun stuff at Scooter and Skeeter's birthday party.
Fozzie: (turning toward the door) You know, that's so funny.
Catherine: What's that, Fozzie?
Fozzie: Scooter and Skeeter have the same birthday. I mean, what are the odds?
Catherine: Um....
(Kermit takes the lead, pulling Piggy after him into the common room.)
Kermit: C'mon you guys--let's celebrate a little.
