Actually, there were two girl smurfs. The other was a young smurf named "Sassy". She wore pink overalls and had brown braids. She also had two brothers.
Yes Sassy and her two brothers, known as the Smurflings were introduced several seasons later.
They also introduced a Grandpa Smurf and a Nanny Smurf in addition to the original Papa Smurf so that's three girls they had though I don't know where all these new characters originally came from.

I remember cartoon network used to have this strange commercial asking a bunch of questions and giving rediculous answers that could not be true about some tv shows. Well, one of them asks "Why are smurfs blue?" and Grouchy pops up saying "We're not, we're green, adjust your tv" and he reaches out of this tv he was standing in, turns a dial, and turns green.

Oh my, I remember that! Pretty weird stuff.
